  • Patent number: 7224484
Abstract: When a sensor of a scanning array is identified as “bad” (defective), data from a neighboring “good” sensor is used to determine pixel data nominally associated with the bad sensor. During a calibration procedure, dark-offset and gain values are determined for each sensor to compensate for individual differences between the sensors of the array. These values are entered into a table in memory. During scanning of an actual image, the values are used to determine digital image pixel data from the signal data provided by the sensors. The calibration procedure also identifies bad sensors, e.g., sensors that remain on or off, irrespective of the illumination incident to them. Extreme offset and gain values are entered into the table locations associated with the respective sensor. When the extreme values are detected, the signal data for the respective sensor is discarded, and the pixel data associated with the most recently processed good sensor is used as the pixel data associated with the bad sensor.

  • Patent number: 7136204
Abstract: A full-zone optical image addressing apparatus, including an addressing device, an image extraction converter, a comparator, an AND gate and a counter. The addressing device is located at the enclosure of the scanner and includes a plurality of geometric patterns. Each of the geometric patterns includes a plurality of rows of pixels. While receiving an exposure signal, the image extraction converter extracts one row of pixels from the addressing device, such that a series of analog signals is obtained and output to the comparator. The comparator then compares the series of analog signals to an analog critical voltage to output a series of analog comparison signals to the AND gate. The AND gate synchronously processes the series of analog comparison signals and a pixel rate clock to output the pixel data corresponding to the extracted row of pixels to the counter.

  • Patent number: 7136191
Abstract: The present invention relates to an automatic print inspection method in which photographic prints are scanned to obtain digitized images. The scanned digitized image of the photographic print is compared to digital image data which represents the original captured image. The resulting digital correction data indicates whether or not there are defects in the print media or faults in the printer process, including the digitizing steps. Signal processing transformations may be used to decide how to separate media defects from processing faults and how to correct for the latter. The method of the present invention can be used as a final quality check so that any defective prints can be rejected and remade before orders go out to a customer.

Abstract: In an image output device a test chart 18 including tests charts 6 of each color is used, and a tone correction table is calculated. The test charts 6 are patterned in a checkered pattern, each including continuous areas 10 in which the tones increase in steps and reference areas 11 for comparison with the continuous areas 10. The reference areas 11 are formed of white ground of paper in a highlight proof part 7, a solid pattern with a maximum density in a shadow proof part 8, and halftone dot-concentrated or line screens with a lower resolution than in the continuous areas in a middle proof part 9. Tone correction values are calculated from characteristic values of the highlight, shadow and middle parts, obtained from visual data of the test chart 18.

  • Patent number: 7106964
Abstract: A light amount adjustment method for use in an image exposure apparatus records an image by scanning a photosensitive material with a light beam modulated in accordance with image signal. The light beam has a first light amount level and a second light amount level that is higher than the first light amount level to perform exposure of one dot. The method sets the first light amount level based on the image signal, exposes test patches by displacing a focus position of the light beam on the photosensitive material and changing the second light amount level that is outputted in accordance with changing of the image signal and adjusts the second light amount level such that halftone dot percent fluctuations of the exposed test patches are minimized to set the adjusted second light amount level.

  • Patent number: 7106477
Abstract: In a digital copier having an input scanner and a printer, image placement or magnification errors which relate to the input scanner can be corrected in copies made at the printer. A person feeds into the input scanner a special test pattern sheet. The copy of the test pattern may exhibit readily-detectable image defects, manifest as “readings” which the user can communicate to the computer, such as through a user interface. A control system in the computer can take the readings and use them to correct attributes of prints made in subsequent copying operations.

Abstract: In an image reading device having a sheet-through mechanism, a controller controls a stepping motor to decelerate an image reading system when the image reading system is moved to a reference white plate reading position, and controls a stepping motor drive electric current to decrease when the image reading system reads a reference white plate. When the image reading system finishes reading the reference white plate, the controller controls the stepping motor drive electric current to increase so as to rapidly decelerate the image reading system. The controller further controls the stepping motor such that a moving speed of the image reading system to an original document reading position is lower than a moving speed of the image reading system to the reference white plate reading position.

  • Patent number: 7095531
Abstract: Defects in an image forming system may give rise to visible streaks, or one-dimensional defects in an image that run parallel to the process direction. One known method for compensating for streaks introduces a separate tone reproduction curve for each pixel column in the process direction. A compensation pattern according to this invention has a plurality of halftone regions that are lead by, trained by, and separated by rows of fiducial marks. The fiducial marks allow the printer pixel grid and a scanning pixel grid to be correlated. The gray level in each pixel column of each gray level portion is measured and analyzed to produce a local tone reproduction curve for each pixel column and associated line width. The local tone reproduction curves are then used to compensate for the streak defect when printing.
