Patent number: 6166829Abstract: An optical image scanner includes a scan head that is mounted onto a guide member with a bias torque that reduces uncertainty in position of the scan head. A drive member, such as a belt or cable, is attached to the scan head with an offset relative to a centerline of the guide member. A tensioning device ensures that the drive member asserts force on the scan head at each of the attachment points. As a result, a bias torque is placed onto the scan head, relative to the guide member, reducing uncertainty in position. For bidirectional movement, the biasing torque is the same for either direction of travel.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1998Date of Patent: December 26, 2000Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Michael L. Patent number: 6088133Abstract: Optics for a document scanner arc disclosed which permit information on a document to be optically reorganized so they may be input as a single image to the lens of a single charge coupled device camera without the need for moving optics or moving document arrangements to sequentially image portions of the document to the input lens of the camera. The optics are mirrors in a fixed, stationary arrangement with respect to each other, between the camera lens and a document to be read. All the information to be read on the document is reflected between the mirrors and is thereby transposed physically before being input to the lens of the camera as a single image. After the single image input to the camera is scanned and stored the image portions are re-transposed using a computer and software utilizing a transposition algorithm to re-create the information on the document in their proper order.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1997Date of Patent: July 11, 2000Assignee: Imaging Automation Inc.Inventors: James Thomas Francis, Howard Prescott Denton

Patent number: 6064496Abstract: The present invention is directed to a hand-held scanning device in which the scanning device housing window is attached directly to the optical assembly. In this manner, alignment between the window and the optical assembly may be maintained even when the housing is being subjected to stress. The window is also designed to float with respect to at least a portion of the housing, thus allowing the housing to flex without causing movement of the window relative to the optical assembly. A tortuous path seal arrangement may be provided between the window and the housing. The tortuous path seal allows the housing to move relatively to the window, and yet inhibits the entry of dust and other contaminants into the interior of the housing through the space provided between the window and the housing.Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 1997Date of Patent: May 16, 2000Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Ronald K. Patent number: 5991468Abstract: An image sensor head having a CCD is rotatably attached to a card body having a computer interface. A DC/DC converter for supplying the image sensor head with electric power is provided so as to be situated outside and external device, such as a computer, when the card body is loaded in the external device. This facilitates the radiation of heat. A shielding case is provided to cover and shield the DC/DC converter. When the card body experiences deformation, the shielding case contacts a metal cover which covers a main board within the card body, thereby preventing excessive bending and assuring electrical safety. Thus, in a card-type image sensor of the type which introduces an image to a computer or the like, the power supply for image sensing purposes radiates heat more effectively and is provided with improved shielding.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 1996Date of Patent: November 23, 1999Assignee: Canon Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Taro Murakami, Shigeki Okauchi, Hitoshi Nabetani

Patent number: 5963343Abstract: When the scanner moves over the subject copy, the first reading elements of a close contact type image sensor (1) read the copy. As the movement causes a platen roller (5) to rotate, an encoder ring (4), having a prescribed distinguishing pattern (10) printed within, rotates. Second reading elements configured outside the copy reading range of the close contact type image sensor (1) read the distinguishing pattern, which moves over the reading face as the encoder ring (4) rotates. The second reading elements which read the distinguishing pattern are driven independently of the first reading elements for reading the subject copy, and their reading period is shorter than that of the first reading elements. This configuration enables the moving speed to be accurately detected even when the scanner moves faster than the copy reading speed.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 1997Date of Patent: October 5, 1999Assignee: NEC CorporationInventors: Shinya Kubo, Tetsuichiro Yamamoto

Patent number: 5852686Abstract: An image reading device, particularly a hand scanner, capable of setting a reading position in the main scanning direction accurately at all times. A stage glass is affixed to the reading surface of the hand scanner. A reference line is printed on the stage glass outside of the valid reading range of a CCD (Charge Coupled Device) image scanner. For the adjustment of the valid reading range, the image sensor and a lens are roughly adjusted such that data representative of the reference line appears at the edge of the valid reading range. Subsequently, the valid reading range is electrically shifted in the main scanning direction such that the reference line disappears.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1996Date of Patent: December 22, 1998Assignee: NEC CorporationInventors: Shinya Kubo, Tetsuichiro Yamamoto, Yasushi Matsumoto

Patent number: 5825502Abstract: A mobile device for close-up -photography or -video-recording is so designed that it is easily useable for the investigation of surface details of an object which is particularly large and soft, for example human skin. When placed in contact with the surface of the object, then without further adjustments a sharp and greatly enlarged image is obtained. The device includes a distance-enforcing structure between the optical system and the object which in the object-side focal area ends with a vaulted surface. The vaulted surface is mechanically stiff and is shaped to compensate the image-plane curvature of the optical system by establishing a corresponding object-plane curvature. This compensation enhances the sharpness of the image obtained for an object surface which is pressed against the vaulted surface and thus is positioned in the true object-side focal area of the optical system.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1996Date of Patent: October 20, 1998Assignee: Teach Screen Software GmbHInventor: Rolf Mayer

Patent number: 5818610Abstract: A scanner frame comprises a vertical track which is slidably attached at one end thereof to a horizontal track. The horizontal track is attached to a drawing board or any other suitable flat surface. An optical imaging device (i.e., an optical scanner) is slidably attached to the vertical track. A marker strip comprising a series of bars of uniform pitch are disposed on a surface of the horizontal track along the length thereof. These bars are detected by a sensor assembly disposed on the vertical track. Another marker strip comprising a series of bars of uniform pitch are disposed on a surface of the vertical track along the length thereof. These bars are detected by a sensor assembly disposed on the scanner. During use, a drawing to be scanned is secured on a board, the vertical track is positioned at the left-most position and the scanner is positioned at the upper end of the vertical track.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 1994Date of Patent: October 6, 1998Assignee: B.C.
