The assembly includes support means for supporting the sheet the curved configuration across its width, having the first surface inwardly oriented with respect to the curved configuration. Thereafter, moving means moves the flexible sheet material so supported in a direction along a read/write path generally parallel to the sheet material length and transverse to the direction of curvature. A read/write arrangement is provided which is configured for reading and/or writing information across the width of the first surface of the sheet as the sheet is moved along the path in the curved configuration.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 2004Date of Patent: May 1, 2007Inventor: John E. Patent number: 7142335Abstract: The scanning method of the invention enables a user to scan transparencies with a duplex scanner having a moveable camera, and a mirror or light source associated with the camera on each side of the document path. The scanner, in its normal mode of operation, is a duplex reflective scanner which means the image, per side, is captured by reflecting light from a light source located on the same side of an opaque flat object as the CCD of the camera that captures the image. In order to scan transparencies, a mechanism is provided which allows an opposing camera light source to be aligned (moved at runtime) with the aperture of the camera opposite the opposing camera light source. This allows the light of the opposing camera light source to project through a transparent object while the opposite camera CCD captures an image of the transparency. The opposite camera, which captures the image, has its light source turned off while in the transparent scanning mode.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 2002Date of Patent: November 28, 2006Assignee: Eastman Kodak CompanyInventor: Carl J. Patent number: 7019813Abstract: A light beam modulated with image information is outputted from a light source and supplied to a switcher, which guides the light beam to one of exposure heads that is selected by the switcher. The light beam is applied from the selected exposure head to a photosensitive medium that is mounted on a partly cylindrical inner circumferential surface of a support to record an image thereon. The light beam can continuously be applied to the photosensitive medium from the exposure heads that are alternatively selected as facing the photosensitive medium, so that the image can efficiently be recorded on the photosensitive medium.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 2001Date of Patent: March 28, 2006Assignee: Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd.Inventor: Hidetoshi Shinada

Patent number: 6947185Abstract: A scanner has a platen supported by a housing. The platen is adapted to abut a media to be scanned. A document cover is adapted to sandwich the media against the platen. The document cover is hinged to the housing by at least one first hinge. The document cover has a base portion having a closed position and at lest one open position, and a flap portion independently hinged to the base portion by at least one second hinge. The flap portion is adapted to open to enable insertion of the media onto the platen while the base portion is in the closed position.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2001Date of Patent: September 20, 2005Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: Modest Khovaylo, Steven Vordenberg, Philipp Refior, Clay Burns

Patent number: 6806980Abstract: A method of correcting illumination variation in a scanned image of a non-planar original object, such as an open book, includes scanning at least a portion of the book in order to produce scanned image data. Illumination variation data is extracted from the scanned image data and used to derive a plurality of illumination compensation values. The scanned image data is then compensated or scaled in accordance with the illumination compensation values. Illumination data is acquired through a sampling window having a long and thin geometry. From the data acquired via the sampling window, foreground and background illumination distributions are defined. From the foreground and background illuminations, high and low threshold values are determined in order to calculate a set of reference or compensation values. A tone reproduction curve is generated in order to map the scanned data, thus normalizing the illumination variation. Alternately, an illumination gain factor is employed in the compensation.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 2000Date of Patent: October 19, 2004Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Beilei Xu, Robert P. Publication number: 20040184117Abstract: In the present invention, an image reading apparatus and the like which is provided with a driving device (21) capable of changing its rotational speed, includes an inertial load changing device 26 for changing the inertial load of a rotating body (23) of the driving device (21). The inertial load changing device 26 includes an inertial body (27) which is adjacently disposed to the rotating body (23) and an interlock unit 28 for attaching the inertial body 27 to the rotating body 23 to create an integral rotation so as to change the inertial load of the rotating body (27). The inertial bodies is provided by single or plural number. The plural number of inertial bodies (27) is individually attached to the rotating body (23) by means of the interlock unit 28 in order to change the inertial load of the rotating body in several levels.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 18, 2003Publication date: September 23, 2004Applicant: TOSHIBA TEC KABUSHIKI KAISHAInventor: Toshihiro Sone

Publication number: 20040169894Abstract: A document scanner for scanning an open book includes a housing and a wedge-shaped transparent platen supported by the housing. The platen defines an upper surface configured to support a book in a face-down position, and a lower surface opposite the upper surface. The platen includes a first platen portion and a second platen portion joined at a vertex to thereby define the wedge-shape of the platen. The document scanner further includes a scan head moveably supported by the housing. The scan head is configured to move generally parallel to the first platen portion and the second platen portion.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 28, 2003Publication date: September 2, 2004Inventors: Leonard T. Patent number: RE42269Abstract: A double side scanner module which consists of a U-shaped inversion device and two image information reading devices is provided for reading images on the two sides of an original in a single pass. The U-shaped inversion device has two ends for providing a paper feeding path and a paper output path respectively. The two ends are at the same side for the convenience of operation. At both of the two ends, there is a glass window. Beneath each of the glass windows, there is an image information reading device. When an original is fed into the paper feeding end and conveyed through the first glass window, the first image information reading device starts to read the image on the first side of the original. When the original is conveyed through the U-shaped inversion device, the scanned side will be inverted to the other side.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 2006Date of Patent: April 5, 2011Assignee: Transpacific Optics LLCInventor: Will Kao
