With Absorption Means Patents (Class 359/614)
  • Patent number: 7777172
Abstract: Optical sensors containing reduced amounts of cross talk, as well as methods for making and using such sensors are described. The sensors contain a light absorption coating that is placed on a portion of the external surface of the optical sensor near the detector. This absorption coating reduces the amount of cross talk by reducing the amount of light reflected inside a transparent package of the sensor. As well, the coating can also reduce the amount of ambient and/or stray light that enters the sensor. The coating adds little cost or complexity to the manufacturing process for the sensors, yet reduces the cross talk without substantially increasing the size of the sensor or without increasing any reliability risks. Other embodiments are also described.

Abstract: Described herein are electromagnetic traps or tweezers. Desired results are achieved by combining two recently developed techniques, 3D negative refraction flat lenses (3DNRFLs) and optical tweezers. The very unique advantages of using 3DNRFLs for electromagnetic traps have been demonstrated. Super-resolution and short focal distance of the flat lens result in a highly focused and strongly convergent beam, which is a key requirement for a stable and accurate electromagnetic trap. The translation symmetry of 3DNRFL provides translation-invariance for imaging, which allows an electromagnetic trap to be translated without moving the lens, and permits a trap array by using multiple sources with a single lens.

In some aspects, a portion of the shield element may be disposed between the substantially planar surface and a plane which is substantially parallel to the substantially planar surface and which includes a portion of the desired focal area. The shield element may include a reflective surface to reflect light received from the secondary mirror toward the desired focal area.

Abstract: A display device comprises a light emitting picture element (120) and a contrast enhancing element (110). The contrast enhancing element comprises a plurality of wave guides (216) separated by interstitial regions (212) being formed as narrowing recesses. An interface between a wave guide (216) and an interstitial region (212) is provided with a reflective layer. The narrowing recesses form a dead end for incident ambient light which is efficiently absorbed by the contrast enhancing element. On the other hand, light emitted by the picture element (120) of the display device is transmitted through the wave guides (216). As a result, the display device has a relatively high contrast ratio, particularly under bright ambient light conditions.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for manipulating particles (micro, nano, and pico) having one or more characteristics with an optical trap formed by modulating a laser beam with a Diffractive Optical Element (DOE). At least one characteristic of the material is selected; and a laser beam having a selected wavelength corresponding to the at least one selected characteristic of the material is generated. Values of the DOE are calculated corresponding to the at least one selected characteristic of the material. The beam and the DOE are modulated to produce a holographic optical trap having properties corresponding to the at least one selected characteristic; the trap is focused to a beam focus or selected spot size; and the beam focus is located near a particle location for trapping the particle therein.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention include a power beam receiver that will not reflect light beyond the regulatory limits for human exposure, except along paths known to be without people. In one embodiment, a baffle is used to trap reflections from surfaces of the receiver. In a second embodiment, the power beam receiver is arranged so that reflections are reflected to another surface of the receiver. These surfaces may be designed as a retroreflector. In a third embodiment, an intentional scattering medium is added to the power beam receiver so that parallel light rays incident on the front surface of the power beam receiver are scattered through a series of angles. As a result, any light escaping the system is diffused.
