    Abstract: A Fresnel lens includes a Fresnel surface that includes effective Fresnel surfaces allowing imaging rays to pass through. Two adjacent effective Fresnel surfaces are connected through a non-effective Fresnel surface. On a cross-section including an optical axis of the Fresnel lens, a draft angle is between a reference line and a connecting straight line between one end of each non-effective Fresnel surface located at a tooth peak of the Fresnel lens and the other end of each non-effective Fresnel surface located at a tooth valley of the Fresnel lens. The optical axis coincides with the cross-section. The reference line is parallel to the optical axis and passes through the end of the effective Fresnel surface located at the tooth peak of the Fresnel lens. The draft angles each smaller than 90 degrees include first, second, third, fourth, and fifth draft angles which gradually increase radially outward from the optical axis.

    Abstract: A Fresnel lens including a plurality of sawtooth-shaped projections, with each projection including a first surface at a first angle and a second surface at a second angle. Each first surface has top and bottom edges and each second surface has top and bottom edges. Each projection has a top intersection where the top edge of the first surface intersects the top edge of the second surface. Adjacent projections have a bottom intersection where the bottom edge of the second surface of a first one of the adjacent projections intersects the bottom edge of the first surface of a second one of the adjacent projections. The lens portion is opaque at the top intersection of the projections, at the bottom intersection of adjacent projections, and on the first surface between the top intersection and the bottom intersection.

    Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide a device called a “G-Fresnel” device that performs the functions of both a linear grating and a Fresnel lens. We have fabricated the G-Fresnel device by using PDMS based soft lithography. Three-dimensional surface profilometry has been performed to examine the device quality. We have also conducted optical characterizations to confirm its dual focusing and dispersing properties. The G-Fresnel device can be useful for the development of miniature optical spectrometers as well as emerging optofluidic applications. Embodiments of compact spectrometers using diffractive optical elements are also provided. Theoretical simulation shows that a spectral resolution of approximately 1 nm can be potentially achieved with a millimeter-sized G-Fresnel. A proof-of-concept G-Fresnel-based spectrometer with subnanometer spectral resolution is experimentally demonstrated.
