Patent number: 9899049Abstract: A magnetic write head having trailing magnetic shield and a trailing magnetic return pole that are recessed from the media facing surface. The magnetic write head includes a write pole, a trailing shield that is separated from the write pole by a non-magnetic trailing gap layer and a trailing magnetic return pole that is connected with the trailing magnetic shield. The trailing magnetic return pole and at least a portion of the trailing magnetic shield have surfaces that face the media facing surface. The surface of the trailing magnetic return pole and at least a portion of the surface of the trailing magnetic shield taper away from the media facing surface. This recess prevents far track interference by preventing stray magnetic fields from the trailing magnetic shield and trailing magnetic return pole from inadvertently affecting the magnetic media.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 2016Date of Patent: February 20, 2018Assignee: Western Digital Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Masayoshi Endo, Cherngye Hwang, Randall George Simmons, Suping Song

Patent number: 8477452Abstract: A bottom end of a main pole includes first, second, and third portions that are contiguously arranged in order of increasing distance from the medium facing surface. A top surface of the main pole includes fourth, fifth, and sixth portions that are contiguously arranged in order of increasing distance from the medium facing surface. Patent number: 8111479Abstract: A magnetic write head for perpendicular magnetic data recording having a trailing shield with a two step throat height. The trailing shield is formed over a non-magnetic bump that forms a notch in the leading edge of the trailing shield. This notch defines a first, smaller throat height closest to the write pole and a larger throat height away from the write pole. The smaller throat height near the write pole prevents excess magnetic flux from leaking to the write pole, thereby ensuring efficient strong write field. The larger trailing shield throat height away from the write pole prevents magnetic saturation of the trailing shield and also greatly facilitates manufacturing avoiding problems related to variations and deviations in manufacturing processes used to define the trailing shield.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 2007Date of Patent: February 7, 2012Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Tsung Yuan Chen, Wen-Chien David Hsiao, Yimin Hsu, Vladimir Nikitin, Changqing Shi

Patent number: 7983010Abstract: A perpendicular magnetic recording head according to the present invention is composed of a first magnetic layer having a main magnetic pole exposed at a facing surface opposite a recording medium, a second magnetic layer adjacent to the first magnetic layer with an intermediary non-magnetic layer disposed therebetween, and a coil layer for applying a recording magnetic field to the first magnetic layer. Since the second magnetic layer has a shape including a substantially arched portion in its cross section along a height direction, it becomes possible to keep an Edge Write magnetic field in a low level and improve external magnetic field resistance.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 2007Date of Patent: July 19, 2011Assignee: TDK CorporationInventors: Yusuke Toma, Hiroshi Kameda, Kiyoshi Kobayashi, Toru Takahashi, Sumihito Morita

Patent number: 7872831Abstract: The invention provides a thin-film magnetic head wherein the combined release angle ? for a dominant recording magnetic field generated from a magnetic pole layer toward a patterned media for the purpose of recording magnetic information is set to within an angle range of 35° to 65° with respect to a patterned media surface. It is thus possible to invert, with efficiency and reliability, the directions of magnetization of isolate bits lined up on the patterned media for high-density recording.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 2007Date of Patent: January 18, 2011Assignee: TDK CorporationInventors: Kei Hirata, Tetsuya Roppongi, Kiyoshi Noguchi

Patent number: 7733604Abstract: A length in a height direction from each end of a front portion of a return-pass layer (first magnetic layer) may be shorter than a length in the height direction from a midpoint of the front portion. As a result, a recording magnetic field may not be concentrated on and may not return to the ends of the front portion, and the intensity of the magnetic field generated from the ends toward the recording medium may be weakened, whereby it may be possible to appropriately suppress the erasing phenomenon of a recorded signal.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 2005Date of Patent: June 8, 2010Assignee: TDK CorporationInventor: Hiroshi Kameda

Patent number: 7667928Abstract: A write shield layer that forms a part of a thin-film magnetic head is set with respect to the widthwise full length W thereof lying substantially on an air bearing surface that is opposite to the recording medium such that when the full length W is trisected, the maximum thickness H1/3side thereof in a range of widthwise ?W size positioned at both ends thereof is larger than the average thickness Hm of the whole write shield layer from the air bearing surface up to the rear (H1/3side>Hm), so that the so-called external magnetic field resistance is improved, and inadvertent erasure of the information already recorded in the recording medium is avoided as much as possible. Besides, the PTP (pole tip protrusion) phenomenon arising from the generation of heat from coils, and external temperature changes can be held back.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 2009Date of Patent: February 23, 2010Assignee: TDK CorporationInventors: Hiraku Hirabayashi, Norikazu Ota

Patent number: 7639453Abstract: A magnetic head structure for use in perpendicular magnetic recording. The magnetic head includes a magnetic write head having a return pole with a magnetic shunt structure extending from the back end opposite the ABS. The magnetic shunt structure prevents magnetic field from the write coil from reaching and affecting the read head. More specifically the shunt structure prevents magnetic field from the portion of the write coil beyond the back gap (as measured from the ABS) from magnetizing a magnetic shield of the read head. The shunt structure is also configured so as to avoid stray field writing. The size and shape of the shunt structure is therefore, limited to avoid attracting stray fields that might cause such stray field writing.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2006Date of Patent: December 29, 2009Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Hardayal Singh Gill, Kuok San Ho, Wen-Chien David Hsiao, Yimin Hsu, Edward Hin Pong Lee, Vladimir Nikitin

Patent number: 7453668Abstract: The present invention provides a method of manufacturing a thin film magnetic head capable of assuring recording characteristics by determining throat height with high precision. A TH specifying layer is formed so as to extend to a position P1 while being adjacent to a gap layer, and an auxiliary insulating layer is similarly formed so as to extend from the position P1 while being adjacent to the gap layer and specify throat height on the basis of the position P1. After that, a main insulating layer is formed so as to cover a thin film coil on the auxiliary insulating layer, and a yoke layer is formed so as to extend while being partially on the TH specifying layer. The throat height is determined accurately and stably on the basis of the position P1 by the auxiliary insulating layer.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 2005Date of Patent: November 18, 2008Assignee: TDK CorporationInventors: Susumu Aoki, Reiichi Kurumisawa, Norikazu Ota, Yasuyuki Notsuke, Yuichi Watabe
