Patent number: 7881019Abstract: A magnetic structure for use in a magnetic head for avoiding stray field writing. The magnetic structure can be for example a magnetic shield or could be a magnetic pole of a write head and is particularly advantageous for use in a perpendicular recording system, because such perpendicular recording systems are especially susceptible to stray field writing. The magnetic structure includes a forward protruding portion that extends toward the air bearing surface (ABS) of the head also includes first and second wing portions that extend laterally from the forward protruding portion. The wing portions each have includes an inner constant recess portion, and an outer tapered portion. The inner constant recess portion of each wing prevents stray field writing while also preventing magnetic saturation, the outer tapered portions, which taper away from the ABS as they extend laterally outward, further prevent stray field writing by removing the outer corners of the shield away from the ABS.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 2006Date of Patent: February 1, 2011Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Wen-Chien David Hsiao, Yimin Hsu, Ming Jiang, Vladimir Nikitin

Patent number: 7810226Abstract: A manufacturing method of a thin-film element having a lower layer with a narrower width is provided, which comprises steps of: forming a first film and a second film on the first film; forming a second layer having a width WUP obtained by trimming the second film; forming a mask film having a smaller etching rate than the first film so as to cover the second layer; forming a pattern having a width WTR larger than the width WUP, obtained by collectively trimming the mask film covering the second layer and at least an upper portion of the first film; and forming a first layer having a width WLO smaller than the width WUP or having a portion with a width WLO smaller than the width WUP, obtained by trimming the first film without changing the width WUP of the second layer.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 2007Date of Patent: October 12, 2010Assignee: TDK CorporationInventors: Hiraku Hirabayashi, Yohei Koyanagi

Patent number: 7612964Abstract: A magnetic write head and method of manufacture thereof that has a first pole structure having a notched structure configured with a steep shoulder portion and a narrow vertical notch portion extending from the top of the steep shoulder portion. The write head also includes a second pole structure (P2) that has a very narrow width (track width) and that is self aligned with the narrow vertical notch structure of the first pole structure. The write head provides excellent magnetic properties including a very narrow track width and minimal side writing, while avoiding magnetic saturation of the poles.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 2005Date of Patent: November 3, 2009Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Daniel Wayne Bedell, Hieu Lam, Kim Y. Patent number: 7593186Abstract: A magnetic disk drive head is disclosed including a write head, which includes a P1 layer having a pedestal portion, a gap layer formed on the P1 layer, and a P2 layer formed on the gap layer. The P1 layer includes a shoulder formation having a neck portion and a beveled portion. Also disclosed is a disk drive having a write head with a P1 layer with shoulder formation, and a method for fabricating a write pole for a magnetic recording head having a P1 layer with shoulder formation.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2005Date of Patent: September 22, 2009Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Daniel Wayne Bedell, Hung-Chin Guthrie, Ming Jiang, Hieu Lam, Jyh-Shuey Lo, Edward Hin Pong Lee, Aron Pentek

Patent number: 7549213Abstract: A method for independently controlling track width and bevel angle of a write pole tip having a P3 pole tip for perpendicular recording. The method includes establishing the track width in a portion of the P3 layer material. A portion of this portion having the established track width is protected by providing a temporary masking material to make a protected portion. At least one unprotected portion is left exposed to be shaped. This unprotected portion is then beveled to produce at least one beveled portion having a bevel angle. The protected portion produces a rectangular portion which together with the beveled portion produce a hexagonal pole tip. Also a magnetic head having a hexagonal pole tip, and a disk drive having a magnetic head having a hexagonal pole tip.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 2005Date of Patent: June 23, 2009Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Yimin Hsu, Jyh-Shuey Lo
