Patent number: 4688105Abstract: A video recording system enables self-service production of vended videocassette recordings to a user or customer, with user control of several features. Preferably the system includes forming a composite video picture with the user's image in combination with a user-selected background sequence. Compositing may be by chromakeying, with a key color as a backdrop behind the user in a recording booth. As the composite video recording is made the user preferably is able to watch the composite image on a monitor, which may also include prompting messages for the user. A preferred control for the system involves control data encoded on a videodisc, which also holds a plurality of selectable background sequences.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1985Date of Patent: August 18, 1987Inventors: Arthur R. Patent number: 4685013Abstract: A method of aligning a tape head with the use of a calibration head that is adapted to produce a calibration tape having a pair of spacedly disposed write signals extending substantially normal to the direction of tape travel but at opposite small equal angles to the normal. The calibration tape is passed over the tape head that is to be aligned. The calibration tape is read to detect sequential write signals to determine differences in amplitude therebetween so that the azimuth of the tape head may be adjusted until the detected write signals are of equal amplitude.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 1985Date of Patent: August 4, 1987Assignee: Pericomp Corp.Inventors: Kyriacos Joannou, Daniel C. Patent number: 4683512Abstract: A device for variably adjusting a moment of inertia of a drum of a videocassette recorder. The device comprises a plurality of inertial masses adapted to add a variable increment of a moment of inertia to a moment of inertia of the drum. In virtue of the possibility of varying the moment of inertria of the drum, it is possible to check the frame condition of the recorder, and thus, to obtain an optimum frame condition.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1986Date of Patent: July 28, 1987Assignee: Gold Star Co., Ltd.Inventor: Soo K. Patent number: 4680661Abstract: A magnetic disk cartridge comprises a case, a flexible magnetic disk sheet rotatably housed in the case, and at least one liner secured to an inner wall surface of the case facing the magnetic disk sheet so that the liner contacts the magnetic disk sheet. The liner is constituted by a nonwoven fabric for contact with the magnetic disk sheet, and a chemical dust attraction layer secured to the inner wall surface of the case.Type: GrantFiled: December 26, 1985Date of Patent: July 14, 1987Assignee: Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd.Inventor: Kengo Oishi

Patent number: 4680659Abstract: A tape drive mechanism includes a first gear assembly having a first gear mounted on a shaft driven by a motor and a second gear slip-frictionally coupled to the shaft in coaxial relationship with the first gear. Third and fourth slip-frictionally coupled gears form a second gear assembly which are engaged with the first gear and a takeup reel drive gear, respectively, during playback modes. A third gear assembly is provided to engage with the second gear and the takeup reel drive gear during fast-forward modes. Further included is a fourth gear assembly which is engageable with the second gear and a supply reel drive gear during rewind modes. A timing lever is provided to prevent the fourth gear assembly from engaging with the second gear and the supply gear until recording mode is completely terminated should a manual command for rewind operation occur during such modes.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1983Date of Patent: July 14, 1987Assignee: Victor Company of Japan, LimitedInventor: Kaetsu Imai

Patent number: 4679105Abstract: The invention is a head positioning assembly (10) for use with a conventional disk drive (12). The assembly (10) is adapted to position the ready/write head (22) on a rotating diskette (21) and includes a locating disk (30) provided with a cardioid cam groove (32). A cam follower (46) rides within the cam groove (32) and thereby causes a carriage (40) to move radially between a pair of guide rods (42 and 44) to position the read/write head (22). The locating disk (30) is caused to rotate by selectively activating a solenoid (98) which causes an idler assembly (72) to contact the locating disk (32) with a moving idler belt (90). The idler belt (90) is indirectly powered by the same brushless DC motor (16) which powers the disk drive (12). A sensing subassembly (50) senses a zero position aperture (34) and a plurality of tract position apertures (36) and acts in conjunction with external circuitry (600) and the solenoid (98) to control the rotation of the locating disk (30).Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 1985Date of Patent: July 7, 1987Inventor: Christopher J. Patent number: 4677509Abstract: A spindle assembly for magnetic disks of both-end support type has a hub for fixing the disks, a shaft to which the hub is fixed, a pair of bearings which are spaced in vertical or horizontal direction, a pre-loading spring for pre-loading one of the bearings, and a housing composed of housing parts which accommodates the hub, shaft, bearings and the pre-loading spring. The spindle assembly further has an axial reference surface formed on the hub at a right angle with respect to the shaft, and another axial reference surface formed on one of the housing parts at a right angle with respect to the vertical portion of the bearing associated with the one of the housing parts. When the shaft is mounted in the one of the housing parts with the hub and the pre-loading spring fitted therearound, the hub is axially urged by the spring such that the axial reference surface thereon is brought into abutment with the axial reference surface on the one of the housing parts.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 1985Date of Patent: June 30, 1987Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Hiroshi Nishida, Fujio Yamamoto, Mikio Higashi, Jun Naruse

Patent number: RE32702Abstract: An improved motor assembly including a brushless D.C. motor and an annular member defining a platform for the drive electronics and speed control circuits of the motor. The member is carried on a fixed support within the outer envelope of the motor and includes a thin disk-like body providing a pair of opposed surfaces for mounting the components of the circuits. The fixed support of the motor has a flat annular face surrounding the drive shaft of the motor, and the annular member engages and is secured to the flat face of the support in surrounding relationship to the shaft. In a preferred embodiment, the housing of the motor defines part of the rotor of the motor and is for rotation with the shaft. A flange is secured to the support near the opposite end of the shaft for mounting the motor on a fixed support, such as on the base of a housing forming a part of a disk drive unit.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1984Date of Patent: June 21, 1988Assignee: Papst-Motoren GmbH & Co KGInventors: Alfred Hasler, Bernhard Schuh
