    Abstract: A suspension assembly is designed to carry a slider and read/write head elements in a magnetic data storage device. The suspension assembly is formed from a composite laminate structure that includes first, second, third, fourth and fifth material layers. The layers are arranged such that the second layer is disposed between the first and third layers, and the fourth layer is disposed between the third and fifth layers. The laminate structure is configured using a suitable removal process, such as partial chemical etching, to define a mount plate, a hinge, a load beam functional end, and an electrical lead system. The laminate structure may be further formed with a flexure gimbal system that comprises the third, fourth and fifth layers.

The configuration and location of the integral damping elements can be chosen to selectively reduce the gain of one or more dynamic frequencies (modes). Each integral damping element includes a constraining layer portion provided by an area in which one or both of the primary layers are reduced in thickness, preferably by way of a partial etching process. Each integral damping element also includes a constrained damping layer portion provided by an area of the damping layer that lies in interfacial engagement with the reduced thickness area providing the constraining layer portion.

    Abstract: An electrostatic microactuator for a slider in a disc drive is characterised in that it is formed from a single crystal silicon wafer. This provides a microactuator that has very low parasitic capacitance, virtually no mechanical or thermal creep, or mismatch problems as may occur when parts are separately fabricated. It also allows for efficient mass production by allowing for many of the microactuators to be simultaneously formed from the single crystal silicon wafer. The microactuator comprises a first (stationary) part (22) for attachment to a flexure of a head positioning system in a disc drive and a second (movable) part (24) to which a slider is attachable, which is pivotally coupled (42, 44) to the first part. The first and second parts include elongate strips (30, 32) which are interdigitated to provide comb electrodes.

No silicone is transferred to the viscoelastic layer so that silicone gas generation causing destruction of the memory layer of a disc can be prevented.

    Abstract: A monocoque head suspension carries a read-write head on a distal end and is attachable at a proximal end to an actuator assembly. The monocoque head suspension includes a bottom skin and a top skin, and also a core positioned between the bottom and top skins. The core may be made of low-density material, such as photo-imageable epoxy or polyimide, deposited on the bottom skin, or may be a separately formed piece. The bottom skin and top skin may be made of a stainless steel material.     Abstract: A disk drive assembly in which the suspension and read/write transducer are integrated into a combination assembly and fabricated using thin film deposition techniques thereby producing an assembly which is very low in mass permitting contact recording. In one embodiment, transducers are deposited in a row and column configuration onto a release and support layer covering a wafer substrate having a thickness equal to a desired suspension length. The wafer is separated into a plurality of row sections, with each row section providing one thin film transducer from each column. A second release layer is formed on a separated side on the row section and thin layers of suitable materials are deposited to form a suspension layer including conductive lines extending to the thin film transducers. The first and second release layers are dissolved and the row section is further cut to form the individual combination assemblies.

An etch-retardant layer is received between two outer metal layers at a pre-determined depth from the outer surfaces of the metal layers. In this manner, the inherent variably in etch rate is controlled, permitting the formation of finer geometries in the head suspension than would be otherwise possible.
