  • Patent number: 6381101
Abstract: An apparatus and method for minimizing the risk of damage to a disc surface caused by contact between a disc and a slider in a head disc assembly of a disc drive. The apparatus includes a flexure and slider which are biased away from the disc when the disc is stationary and one or more aerodynamic airfoils attached to the flexure. The airfoils are attached to the flexure and extend from the flexure at an angle relative to the disc so as to interact with an air flow caused when the disc spins to force the flexure and the attached slider to move toward the disc during operation of the disc drive.

  • Patent number: 6366430
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for providing improved roll static angle adjustment for head gimbal assemblies (HGA's) used in disc drives. In the method, proximal and distal clamping members are attached to a load beam of the HGA and are separated by a distance of 4-30% of the length of the load beam. One of the distal and proximal clamping members is rotated about a longitudinal axis of the load beam such that the relative angular position of the distal and proximal clamping members reaches an adjust angle. Also disclosed is a rigid beam section of an HGA that includes apertures which are positioned along maximum stress contours where early plastic deformation of the rigid beam section is desired during adjustment of the roll static angle.

  • Patent number: 6351350
Abstract: A shock limiter system for a head suspension configured to engage with an external structure in a rigid disk drive. The head suspension has a flexure with a head slider oriented in a first direction over a disk surface. The head suspension includes a load beam having a mounting region, a rigid region and a spring region located between the mounting region and rigid region. The rigid region and the flexure define a distal region of the head suspension. The shock limiter system comprises a shock limiter extending from the distal region in a second direction generally opposite the first direction. The shock limiter is positioned on the distal region to engage with the external structure to limit movement of the head suspension away from the disk surface during a shock event.

  • Publication number: 20010030837
Abstract: A suspension for connecting a slider to an actuator arm of a disc drive includes a cushion extending vertically from the suspension. The cushion limits vertical excursions and dampens motion of the suspension during a shock event to better maintain the slider in contact with a disc surface in the disc drive. The cushion can be formed as an external feature attached to the suspension, such as a foam or plastic cushion, or as an integral feature of the suspension. A disc drive assembly having a plurality of discs includes a first suspension and a first cushion extending vertically downward toward a second suspension. The second suspension may include a second cushion extending vertically upward toward the first suspension.

Abstract: A disc drive includes a spindle motor, a spindle, a disc, control circuitry, an actuator, and an armature. The spindle motor is coupled to the spindle to which the disc is also coupled. The control circuitry is coupled to the actuator and provides the actuator with control signals. The armature includes a load beam coupled to the actuator such that energization of the actuator displaces the load beam. The gimbal is coupled to the head and is also coupled to the load beam by a plurality of spaced apart. attachment points. An interconnect operably couples the head to the control circuitry.

  • Patent number: 6212044
Abstract: A magnetic head device comprises a moving member comprising a slider, which is fastened to a system for applying a magnetic field and slides on or is close to an optomagnetic disk, an elastically supporting member having a first end, to which the moving member is attached, the elastically supporting member supporting the moving member in a manner that the moving member can move, a fastening member fastened to a second end of said elastically supporting member, a position control pin, and a position control hole formed at the center of gravity of the moving member. When a shock is applied, the position control pin mates with the position control hole, so that not only the vertical position of the moving member, but also its horizontal position can be restricted. Moreover, since the position control hole is formed at the center of gravity of the moving member, a resultant moment on the moving member can be avoided. Thus, a magnetic head device with excellent shock resistance can be provided.

  • Patent number: 6201664
Abstract: A hard disk drive has actuator arms with a load beam or suspension extending from one end. Each suspension carries an integrated lead layer with electrical traces which are connected to a magnetic read/write heads for interacting with magnetic disks in the disk drive. Each suspension also has a pair of polymer pads on each side of the traces. Each pad has a series of bumps which give the pads a greater thickness than the lead layer for preventing contact between the traces, suspensions and magnetic disks during shock vibration. The pads also prevent contact between the trace conductors and the head separator during the separation process.
