Patent number: 7821739Abstract: A metal foil disk offers some of the best characteristics of both the hard disk and floppy disk for digital data storage. One embodiment uses an opposed slider air bearing arrangement that provides advantages when used with a high speed metal foil disk in either a fixed or removable format. Use is made of the fact that the opposing sliders interact through their influence on the flexible disk that is sandwiched between them. Asymmetry of opposing air bearings may be created by etching the air bearing pad opposite the recording element pad to a depth sufficient that the flying height and air film stiffness of the opposing pad reach desired levels. The result is an air bearing interface with low flying height and high stiffness over the recording element opposed by a high flying height and low stiffness on the other side of the disk. This air bearing interface provides an enhanced dynamic flexibility to the metal foil disk when it is subjected to mechanical shock.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 2007Date of Patent: October 26, 2010Assignee: Antek Peripherals, Inc.Inventor: James White

Patent number: 7031103Abstract: A hard disk drive having a disk storing data, a spindle motor rotating the disk, an actuator having two arms disposed at both sides of the disk, and a disk locking apparatus locking the disk not to rotate by closely contacting a side surface of the disk when the disk stops rotating. A suspension supporting a record/reproduce slider is installed at a first arm disposed at one side surface of the disk. The disk locking apparatus is installed at a second arm disposed at the other side surface of the disk. The disk locking apparatus has a dummy suspension whose one end portion is installed at the second arm and has a predetermined elastic force, and a dummy slider installed at other end portion of the dummy slider, and locking a stopped disk to prevent movement of the stopped disk and damage to bearings of the spindle motor.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2003Date of Patent: April 18, 2006Assignee: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.Inventor: Yong-chul Yoo

Patent number: 6487049Abstract: A pair of opposing drive heads are positioned in a storage media drive to read and/or write a storage media interposed therebetween. Each drive head has a sensor face that includes first and second parallel longitudinally extending air-bearing surfaces. Each air-bearing surface has generally longitudinally opposing leading and trailing terminations. The storage media travels adjacent the sensor face in a traveling direction extending along the air-bearing surfaces from the leading to the trailing terminations. A drive sensor is positioned on the first air-bearing surface a distance D1 from the trailing termination thereof. The trailing termination of the second air-bearing surface extends farther a distance D2 in the traveling direction than the trailing termination of the first air-bearing surface.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1998Date of Patent: November 26, 2002Assignee: Iomega CorporationInventor: David Hall

Patent number: 6445547Abstract: When loading an upper head, it is brought into contact with a disc, with a lower head being in contact with the disc. In this process, the entire surface of the upper head which slides on the disc and in which gaps are provided is brought into contact with the disc at a position off the data zone. Further, the upper head is provided with a supported member, and a support member supporting the supported member, whereby the upper head is supported before coming into contact with the disc, and the upper head is gradually brought close to the disc to effect contact.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2000Date of Patent: September 3, 2002Assignees: Alps Electric Co., Ltd., Sony CorporationInventors: Isao Asano, Kouzou Onodera

Publication number: 20020003682Abstract: In a head portion 13 disposed at a side 1, rails 13a and are formed projectingly and a head gap G16 is formed in the rail 13a located on an inner side. Likewise, in a head portion 15 disposed at a side 0, rails 15a and 15b are formed projectingly in an opposed relation to the rails 13b and 13a, respectively, and a head gap G17 is formed in the rail 15a located on an outer side. A point 16a of abutment of the head gap G16 with a magnetic disc D and a point 17a of abutment of the head gap G17 with the magnetic disc are projected in an alternate manner beyond a center S in the thickness direction the magnetic disc, whereby the head gaps G16, G17 and the magnetic disc D can be kept in satisfactory contact with each other.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 2, 1999Publication date: January 10, 2002Inventor: TSUYOSHI KAKUNO
