  • Patent number: 8995093
Abstract: In an HDD actuator pivot bearing unit 10, an axial inner surface 22a of a shield cap 22 is formed into a stepped shape so that an axial minimum gap a1 with a shield member 14e of one bearing 14 is narrower than an axial minimum gap a2 with an outer ring 14b and so that an axial minimum gap a3 with a boundary position 14b3 between an axial end face of the outer ring 14 and an annular groove 14b1 is narrower than the axial minimum gap a2 with the outer ring 14. By doing so, the amount of air passing through an interior of the bearing can be reduced to thereby reduce outparticles.

  • Patent number: 8312617
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a disk drive device including: assembling a subassembly by fixing at least a bearing unit, a drive unit and a hub to a base member in a first clean room; cleaning the subassembly in a second clean room; and sealing the subassembly by a sealing member. The first clean room and the second clean room are communicated with each other by a communicating opening for transferring the subassembly, and an atmospheric pressure in the second clean room is equal to or higher than that in the first clean room.

  • Patent number: 7952837
Abstract: The present invention is a device for increasing the stiffness of a pivot bearing assembly generally employed along with an actuator assembly of a magnetic disk drive. More specifically, bearing cartridges generally used in the art, are modified with a smaller spacer and a stiffener that is associated with the shaft. This modification reduces the rotating mass of the actuator assembly and increases the stiffness of the pivot assembly about which it rotates, thereby yielding greater system performance by increasing a critical resonance mode frequency.

  • Patent number: 7428125
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention position accurately an actuator head suspension assembly (AHSA) relative to a magnetic disk without using any positioning jig, as achieved through a simple structure and involving no increase in manufacturing, and to prevent the AHSA from being charge. In one embodiment, a conductive AHSA includes a pivot opening formed to provide a step at an adjoining portion of two holes having different hole diameters from each other. A pivot bearing assembly includes a first conductive roller bearing and a second conductive roller bearing. The first and the second roller bearings include outer races and inner races with balls interposed between the outer races and the inner races. The first and the second roller bearings are disposed in tandem to achieve the following arrangements.

  • Patent number: 7072148
Abstract: A pivot assembly that narrows the gap of the seal member as much as possible and can effectively restrain the diffusion of gas and dirt from the inside, and, moreover, can also solve the problem of out gas from a hub cap, is presented. The pivot assembly has ball bearings mated to both ends of a shaft, a spacer mated to a sleeve disposed between both ball bearings at the outer circumferences of these ball bearings, and has a hub cap member that covers the outside end face of the ball bearings at one end of the shaft. The hub cap is laser welded to the outer circumference of the shaft and the inner circumference of the sleeve, and after laser welding, is thin-width cut by a laser along the entire circumference at the radial middle part.

  • Patent number: 6574076
Abstract: A pivot assembly for sustaining a magnetic head, a head suspension and an actuator block pivotally parallel to magnetic disks oscillates slowly. Hence the invention has been made in light of examining a sealing structure for retaining sufficient capability of preventing a leakage of lubricant and retaining sufficient capability of preventing a contamination of lubricant, characterized in that retaining required sealing capabilities, an annular shield plate is secured to the shaft, achieving pivot assembly manufacturing cost by reducing machining process and a number of sealing members.

  • Patent number: 6229676
Abstract: A ferrofluid seal for a hard disk drive actuator bearing has two circular plates which are axially spaced apart about a nonmagnetic pivot shaft of the actuator. The plates are parallel and in close proximity to one another. The upper plate is made of magnetically-conductive steel and is mounted to a stationary sleeve which surrounds the shaft. The lower plate is mounted to the shaft and has an annular magnet with pole pieces on an upper surface. A magnetic ferrofluid is located between the magnet and the upper plate to complete the magnetic circuit and form a seal. The ferrofluid seal prevents bearing emissions such as grease oil vapor and aerosol droplets from contaminating the disk drive.
