  • Patent number: 7570460
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a structure of a pivot receiving surface which may excellently adjust the attitude of a head supporting mechanism in a magnetic disk drive. In one embodiment, three projections are formed at a base for supporting a pivot assembly. The first projection is formed on a first line which bisects an angle defined between a second line and a third line determining a range, in which a head/slider flies above a magnetic disk. In contrast, the other two projections are formed at positions apart from the first projection at an angle of 120°, respectively. The attitude of the pivot assembly is adjusted by adjusting the heights of the projections, and thus, a head supporting mechanism is corrected in a predetermined attitude within the range in which the head/slider flies above the magnetic disk.

  • Patent number: 7562434
Abstract: When crimping suspensions to carriage arms using a metal ball by applying ultrasonic vibration to a crimping tool, the suspensions can be crimped to the carriage arms without causing deformation to the suspensions and the like. A method of assembling a carriage assembly aligns attachment holes provided in front ends of carriage arms and crimping portions provided on suspensions to set the suspensions on the carriage arms and then presses a ball through crimping holes provided in the crimping portions while applying ultrasonic vibration to the crimping tool to crimp the suspensions to the carriage arms. When doing so, a ball, such as a ball whose surface has been subjected to a dimpling process, for which a load that acts on the ball when the ball passes through the crimping holes is low compared to a spherical ball is used to crimp the suspensions to the carriage arms.

  • Patent number: 7506427
Abstract: A method of assembling a carriage assembly is disclosed. The method is are capable of suppressing fluctuation in the crimped (deformed) states of spacer portions when suspensions are attached to carriage arms. The method aligns fitting holes 10a provided in carriage arms 10 with spacer holes 12b of suspensions 12. Then the method passes a ball 20 with a diameter equal to or greater than an inner diameter of the spacer holes 12b through the spacer holes 12b to crimp edge portions of the spacer holes 12b in spacer portions 12a and thereby attach the suspensions 12 to the carriage arms 10. While the ball 20 is being pressed and sandwiched from both sides of the spacer holes 12b by two pressure-applying members 40a, 40b an ultrasonic vibration is applied to the two pressure-applying members 40a, 40b, the two pressure applying members 40a, 40b are moved so as to pass the ball 20 through the spacer holes 12b.

  • Patent number: 6556387
Abstract: Apparatus and method for adjusting an actuator mechanical response characteristic in a data handling system, such as a disc drive. An actuator rotates about a pivot system to move a read/write head adjacent a recording surface, the pivot system comprising a stationary shaft and a bearing asesmbly comprising a stationary inner race coupled to the shaft and a rotatable outer race coupled to the actuator. A fastener is provided to engage the shaft and apply an initial amount of axially directed force on the inner race. A broad spectrum excitation is applied to the actuator and a mechanical response characteristic of the actuator is measured. The fastener is repetitively adjusted to increase the amount of axially directed force until the measured mechanical response characteristic of the actuator reaches a desired level.

Abstract: The sleeve of an actuator bearing cartridge is provided with an inclined surface on its outer surface. A tolerance ring is placed around the sleeve, and the cartridge and ring are then press-fit into the actuator bore together. Axial slippage of the ring and actuator relative to the cartridge is prevented as the ring is effectively wedged between the inclined surface and the inner surface of the actuator bore.

  • Patent number: 6519116
Abstract: An aspect of the invention can be regarded as an actuator arm assembly which includes an actuator arm having an actuator bore. The actuator arm is configured to pivot about an axis of rotation. The actuator bore has pivot sleeve contact areas. The actuator arm assembly includes a pivot cartridge which includes a pivot sleeve which is formed to exert compressive force radially from the axis of rotation. The pivot sleeve is formed to locally deform radially relative to the axis of rotation adjacent the pivot sleeve contact areas. The pivot cartridge includes a bearing outer race. The pivot cartridge includes a bearing gap formed between the bearing outer race and the pivot sleeve for inhibiting transfer of force between the pivot sleeve and the bearing outer race.

  • Patent number: 6342992
Abstract: A hard disk drive actuator pivot cartridge has a sleeve, a coaxial pivot shaft, and a pair of bearings therebetween. The bearings are located near the axial ends of the shaft. The sleeve has a wall thickness that is substantially greater than those of prior art sleeves. The sleeve also has a pair of annular pads that are located axially inward of the bearings. The cartridge mounts inside an actuator comb such that only the pads contact the bore of the comb. The axial location of the pads and the greater wall thickness of the sleeve significantly decrease the bending experienced by the cartridge when it is installed in the comb, and thereby increase the servo stability and performance of the disk drive.
