Patent number: 7420782Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a rotating disk storage device adopting a thin yoke structure. In one embodiment, the yoke structure of a voice coil motor includes a base of a casing formed from a ferromagnetic material; an auxiliary yoke disposed so as to be magnetically coupled to the base; a magnet disposed so as to be magnetically coupled to a front surface of the auxiliary yoke; and a main yoke provided with yoke legs magnetically coupled to the auxiliary yoke and an opposing surface that confronts a front surface of the magnet. In addition, a yoke gap is defined between the opposing surface and the front surface of the magnet. The base and the auxiliary yoke form a magnetic path, which allows a dedicated yoke on a lower portion to be eliminated.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 2004Date of Patent: September 2, 2008Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Takanori Kawakami, Shinichi Kimura, Hiroki Kitahori, Hiroshi Matsuda

Patent number: 6914755Abstract: A disk unit has a voice coil motor to oscillate a suspension arm mounted at the leading end of a head with respect to a disk. The voice coil motor has a voice coil integrally attached to the tail end of the suspension arm, a magnet to cause a magnetic field to act on the voice coil, and a pair of yokes provided in such a positional relationship that the voice coil and magnet are sandwiched therebetween. At least one yoke has a roughly fan-shaped main body and a plate piece portion provided in a condition extended from one end side of the main body. After the formation of the main body and plate piece portion by press working, the yoke is formed by folding the plate piece portion on the main body.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2002Date of Patent: July 5, 2005Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha ToshibaInventor: Shigeki Yanagihara

Patent number: 6654207Abstract: Disclosed is a magnetic latch for a disc drive. Upper and lower voice coil magnet pole pieces include extensions which bend toward one another, defining a gap therebetween. The gap creates a magnetic field which attracts and holds a disc drive actuator in a park position when the drive is not in use.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2001Date of Patent: November 25, 2003Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: Yiren Hong, Tak Koon Qoi, Chor Shan Cheng

Patent number: 6442003Abstract: A linear actuator for a removable cartridge magnetic disk drive includes a center guide rail on which the actuator carriage travels. Bushings and the motor coil are spaced symmetrically with respect to the heads so that the center of mass, center of friction, center of force, and center of stiffness of the carriage are all aligned along the center rail. An outrigger travels on another rail to prevent rotation of the carriage.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 1996Date of Patent: August 27, 2002Assignee: Iomega CorporationInventors: David E. Patent number: 6369990Abstract: In a recording/reproducing device for use in recording and reproducing data on and from a recording medium while moving read/write head means relative to the recording medium in a moving direction, which comprises a carriage supporting the read/write head means and guided by a guiding member in the moving direction, and a voice coil motor comprising a voice coil and a magnetic circuit device for driving the carriage in the moving direction. The carriage has a coil holding portion by which the voice coil is fixedly held in the condition that the coil axis is arranged in the moving direction. The voice coil is applied with a driving electric current for driving the carriage. The magnetic circuit device is fixedly disposed adjacent to the voice coil to generate a magnetic field intersecting the driving current flowing through the voice coil, the voice coil moving in the moving direction together with the carriage by an interaction of the driving current and the magnetic field.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 2001Date of Patent: April 9, 2002Assignee: Mitsumi Electric Co., Ltd.Inventors: Teruo Shimazu, Toshiharu Shimizu, Yoshihide Majima, Toshimitsu Itoh

Patent number: 6285530Abstract: A drive section is disposed on only one side of a moving member. In the drive section, a coil is disposed sideways of a support portion so as to be in a vertically long state, and a guide portion is provided on an upper surface of the coil so as to extend from the coil onto a U-shaped yoke disposed on the side opposed to the coil. One side of the yoke is inserted into the coil. On an upper surface of the yoke is disposed a guide receiving portion which supports the tip end of the guide portion slidably. The yoke can be utilized to prevent rotation of the moving member, whereby it is possible to attain the simplification of structure.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 1999Date of Patent: September 4, 2001Assignee: Alps Electric Co., Ltd.Inventor: Takashi Nakai

Patent number: 6198605Abstract: Narrow gaps near the end of travel of a linear actuator coil of a magnetic disk drive is disclosed. The gaps are formed between actuator magnets and inner return path members on opposing sides of an actuator carriage. The narrow gaps are formed by protrusions on the inner return path members that extend into the gaps. The narrow gaps enhance uniformity of force applied to the carriage by diminishing the end effects, which enables the entire length of the air gap to be used for actuator travel.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 1998Date of Patent: March 6, 2001Assignee: Iomega CorporationInventors: John C.
