Patent number: 11443763Abstract: A data storage device includes a stack of data storage disks mounted on a spindle, a first arm and a second arm. The stack comprises a first plurality of upper disks and second plurality of lower disks. The first arm is movably attached to an actuator shaft, the first arm having a first head end that supports a first head, the first arm configured to move along a first portion of the actuator shaft to enable the first head to interact with data storage surfaces of the first plurality of upper disks. The second arm has a second head end that supports a second head, the second arm attached to and configured to move along a second portion of the actuator shaft, independently of the first arm, to enable the second head to interact with data storage surfaces of the second plurality of lower disks.Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 2021Date of Patent: September 13, 2022Assignee: SEAGATE TECHNOLOGY LLCInventors: Yichao Ma, Xiong Liu

Patent number: 7420782Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a rotating disk storage device adopting a thin yoke structure. In one embodiment, the yoke structure of a voice coil motor includes a base of a casing formed from a ferromagnetic material; an auxiliary yoke disposed so as to be magnetically coupled to the base; a magnet disposed so as to be magnetically coupled to a front surface of the auxiliary yoke; and a main yoke provided with yoke legs magnetically coupled to the auxiliary yoke and an opposing surface that confronts a front surface of the magnet. In addition, a yoke gap is defined between the opposing surface and the front surface of the magnet. The base and the auxiliary yoke form a magnetic path, which allows a dedicated yoke on a lower portion to be eliminated.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 2004Date of Patent: September 2, 2008Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Takanori Kawakami, Shinichi Kimura, Hiroki Kitahori, Hiroshi Matsuda

Patent number: 6805980Abstract: Refractory metal layers 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10, and rare earth alloy magnetic layers 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 12 are alternately deposited, so as to form a multilayer structure including four or more layers on a substrate. The refractory metal layers 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 are formed from at least one kind of material selected from a group consisting of Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, and W, and each has a thickness of not less than 5 nm nor more than 50 nm. The rare earth alloy magnetic layers 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 12 have tetragonal R2Fe14B (R is Nd and/or Pr) as a primary constituent phase, and each has a thickness of not less than 50 nm nor more than 500 nm.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 2001Date of Patent: October 19, 2004Assignee: Neomax Co., Ltd.Inventor: Minoru Uehara

Patent number: 6703727Abstract: An improved magnet for use in voice coil actuators is disclosed. The improved magnet includes first and second ends and a top surface, which includes one or more reversed slope notches. Each reversed slope notch may be located in proximity to the ends of the magnet, and may be located such that the magnet is shaped symmetrically about its center. The reversed slope notch is generally characterized in that it includes a notch surface which slopes downward towards the associated end of the magnet. The reversed slope notch or notches minimize the drop-off of force of the voice coil actuator near the ends of the actuator's stroke. In one embodiment, the magnet is part of a linear voice coil actuator that includes a return structure enclosing a magnet and an air gap. In this embodiment, the top surface of the magnet is located adjacent the air gap, and a current-carrying coil travels through the air gap.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 2003Date of Patent: March 9, 2004Assignee: Magnequench, Inc.Inventor: David Johnston Miller

Patent number: 6510028Abstract: A motor for moving a magnetic head includes a carriage. A suspension supports the magnetic head, and is connected to the carriage. A coil is fixed to the carriage. A guide rod is centered at the coil. A magnet arrangement consists of only two magnets located at positions opposed diagonally with respect to the guide rod.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 2001Date of Patent: January 21, 2003Assignee: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.Inventors: Hitoshi Watanabe, Hiroshi Nishizawa

Publication number: 20020101317Abstract: A magnet assembly including spacers having chamfered posts insertable in post holes of opposed spaced backirons. For assembly, chamfered posts are inserted into post holes on a first backiron. A second backiron is supported above the first backiron by an assembly slide to retain the second backiron against the magnetic attraction between the first and second backirons for preassembly alignment of the post holes relative to spacer posts. The assembly slide is withdrawn from the second backiron so that the second backiron is attracted toward the first backiron and spacer posts are inserted into post holes on the second backiron. A method for assembling a magnet assembly using an assembly slide to support a second backiron above a first backiron and withdrawing the slide from the second backiron to assemble components.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 18, 2002Publication date: August 1, 2002Inventors: Terry R.
