  • Patent number: 9047898
Abstract: An apparatus includes a head transducer configured to interact with a magnetic recording medium and a heater configured to thermally actuate the head transducer. A thermal sensor at or near the head transducer is configured to produce a sensor signal. Circuitry is coupled to the heater and configured to cause an oscillation in heater power. The heater power oscillation causes an oscillation in the sensor signal. A detector is coupled to the thermal sensor and configured to detect head-medium contact using the oscillating sensor signal and heater power.

  • Patent number: 8767354
Abstract: A data storage device is disclosed comprising a non-volatile memory and control circuitry comprising an interface operable to receive a supply voltage, and a capacitor. An operating voltage regulator converts the supply voltage into an operating voltage used to operate the non-volatile memory. The supply voltage is used to charge the capacitor to a capacitor voltage higher than the supply voltage, and during a power failure, a backup voltage regulator converts the capacitor voltage into a backup voltage substantially equal to the supply voltage. The operating voltage regulator converts the backup voltage into the operating voltage used to operate the non-volatile memory.

  • Publication number: 20080239581
Abstract: An AC power source is connected to a write coil mounted on a head slider for determination of contact of a head slider with a storage medium. The AC power source outputs the alternating current having a specific frequency. A measuring circuit measures a sequence of indices for the alternating current supplied to the write coil. A component corresponding to the specific frequency is extracted from the sequence of the indices. This serves to eliminate components corresponding to frequencies other than the specific frequency, namely noise. A detecting circuit detects contact between the head slider and the storage medium based on a change in the amplitude of the sequence appearing at the specific frequency. The contact can thus reliably be detected between the head slider and the storage medium.

  • Patent number: 7305572
Abstract: Disk drive spin-up is staggered to reduce peak power requirements. Spin-up of the drives is controlled by selectively delaying voltage inputs to the disk drives. Alternately, spin-up of the drives is controlled by staggering the timing of communications to the disk drives.

  • Patent number: 6469858
Abstract: A disk drive for use with interchangeable flexible magnetic disks of potentially different weights, comprising a disk drive motor for imparting rotation to a disk loaded therein, and a stepper motor for moving a transducer across the track turns on the disk. Since the current consumption of the disk drive motor is subject to change according to the weight of each disk being driven, a current detector circuit is provided for detecting the magnitude of the current being consumed by the disk drive motor. A current control circuit controls the magnitude of the current supplied to the stepper motor in inverse proportion to the detected magnitude of the disk drive motor current. The stepping pulse rate is also varied for making the rotational speed of the stepper motor higher with a decrease in the magnitude of the disk drive motor current. Thus the seek speed is made progressively higher as the disk weight grows less, without increasing the total current requirement of the disk drive.

  • Patent number: 6191907
Abstract: A head drum for a magnetic tape apparatus includes a stationary lower cylinder and a rotating upper cylinder on which at least one write/read head is securely arranged and interacts with a magnetic tape with an exchange of electromagnetic signals. Also provided are at least one amplifier which rotates together with an upper cylinder and amplifies the signals coming from the write/read head, and a rotating transformer for transferring electrical signals between the stationary lower cylinder and the rotating upper cylinder. Storage means for electrical energy arranged on the rotating upper cylinder is capable of supplying electrical power to all the electronic components rotating together with the upper cylinder. A controller is securely arranged on the rotating upper cylinder for monitoring the charge state of the storage means and controlling the duration of the energy transfer as a function of the charge state.
