Patent number: 9025285Abstract: A stainless steel suspension component such as a mount plate is chemically activated by exposure to an activating solution. Gold is then spot plated onto the mount plate in the activated area using an elastomeric mask that is clamped over the mount plate. A component may then be bonded to the gold bond pads. The component may include a PZT microactuator bonded to the gold bond pads using a conductive adhesive such as silver epoxy. The gold acts as an interface metal that provides to a low resistance and environmentally robust ground path for the microactuator.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2013Date of Patent: May 5, 2015Assignee: Magnecomp CorporationInventors: Marcos Lazatin, Brett Holaway

Patent number: 7359160Abstract: In general, the invention provides a magnetic head device and linear tape drive that increase the resonant frequency and the range of a servo system. In particular, the invention provides a magnetic head device comprising a magnetic head chip with multiple magnetic head elements that is a structural part of the fine positioning system which allows the magnetic head elements follow the data tracks on the linear magnetic tape. Consequently, weight is reduced thereby increasing the resonant frequency and servo bandwidth. In another embodiment, the invention provides a magnetic head comprising bimodal actuators that are formed into an S shape and displaced by applying voltage where the polarization direction is opposite from one end to the other. In particular, the head chip may remain stable and may be driven dynamically thereby allowing the mechanical resonance of the bimodal actuator (including the head chip) to increase to 1 kHz or higher.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2005Date of Patent: April 15, 2008Assignees: Imation Corp., Sony CorporationInventors: Hirohisa Koga, Takashi Abe, Yoshihiko Ito, James S. Patent number: 7225513Abstract: A method of manufacturing an actuator includes applying at least one layer of electrically-conductive material and at least one layer of electrically-insulative material to an actuator block, and separating the actuator block into a plurality of actuators, each actuator having at least one actuator finger. The electrically-conductive material and the electrically-insulative material are applied one layer upon another in an alternating manner to the actuator block in at least one actuator finger location. The layer of insulative material is larger in area than the layer of conductive material such that an insulative layer, applied to the actuator block and sandwiching a conductive layer between the insulative layer and the actuator block, at least partially encloses and electrically isolates the electrically-conductive layer by covering the conductive material on at least three sides.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 2004Date of Patent: June 5, 2007Assignee: SAE Magnetics (H.K.) Patent number: 7065845Abstract: A method for preventing operational and manufacturing imperfections in piezoelectric micro-actuators by physically and electrically isolating conductive layers of the piezoelectric material. At least one layer of electrically-conductive material and at least one layer of electrically-insulative material are applied to an actuator finger. The conductive material and the insulative material are applied one layer upon another in an alternating manner. The layer of insulative material is larger in area than the layer of conductive material. An insulative layer, applied to the actuator finger and sandwiching a conductive layer between the insulative layer and the actuator finger, at least partially encloses and electrically isolates the conductive layer by covering the conductive material on at least three sides.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 2002Date of Patent: June 27, 2006Assignee: SAE Magnetics (H.K.) Patent number: 6975123Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed which are operable to determine a capacitance associated with at least one piezoelectric element in an dual actuator disk drive. The capacitance information is used to adjust a driver used to drive the piezoelectric element. Capacitance is determined by supplying a predetermined current into the piezoelectric element(s) for a predetermined time period. A voltage associated with the piezoelectric element(s) is measured following the predetermined time period. The capacitance of the piezoelectric element(s) is then calculated based on the measured voltage, the current supplied, and the predetermined time period.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2001Date of Patent: December 13, 2005Assignee: Maxtor CorporationInventors: Keith Malang, Larry Hutsell

Patent number: 6624553Abstract: A microactuator (30) is provided for positioning a read/write head relative to a mounting region of a head suspension assembly of a magnetic disk drive. The microactuator (30) comprises a substantially C-shaped member (32) having a first end (34) and a second end (38) defining an air gap (42) therebetween. In one embodiment the member (32) is a piezoelectric bimorph expander; in another embodiment the member is a ferromagnetic core. Under an applied electric or magnetic field as appropriate, the size of the air gap (42) may be altered and, because the member (32) is resilient, the original air gap may be restored on removing the applied field. The microactuator may be mounted on the load beam of the head suspension assembly, or between the load beam and head slider supporting the read/write head.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2001Date of Patent: September 23, 2003Assignee: Data Storage InstituteInventors: Kodikkunnathukulangara Sivadasan, Guoxiao Guo

Patent number: 6597539Abstract: A suspension assembly for supporting a read/write head/slider assembly adjacent to a rotating storage disk with dynamically adjustable flying height for use within a hard disk drive is provided. The suspension assembly includes a generally elongated loadbeam that has a baseplate defined at a first end thereof and a gimbaled flexure portion defined at a second end thereof. The flexure portion includes a pair of flexure legs and a flexure tongue. The pair of flexure legs extend from the flexure tongue and each leg attaches to an opposite side of the loadbeam. The flexure tongue generally provides a mounting surface for the read/write head/slider assembly. Strips of thermal-expansion material are attached to the flexure portion. These strips are connected to a power source via a power conductor. When the strips are energized, they expand and deform a portion of the flexure portion.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1999Date of Patent: July 22, 2003Assignee: Maxtor CorporationInventors: Steven Stupp, Richard Blanco, Timothy A. Patent number: 6442005Abstract: A light diffusion preventing structure, suitable for use in vehicles, is provided on a structural member having a hole for passing light from a light source through the structural member and onto a target area. The hole has a three-dimensional shape that has a first opening located near the light source and a second opening located on the opposite side with an inner peripheral surface running between. Both the edge of the second opening and the inner peripheral surface are located completely outside a zone defined by projecting imaginary straight lines from the point light source through the first opening. A second set of imaginary straight lines running between the edge the first opening and the opposite edge of the second opening define at least one crossing angle, the measure of which should preferably not exceed 160 degrees.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 2001Date of Patent: August 27, 2002Assignee: Toyoda Gosei Co., Ltd.Inventors: Tadaoki Ichikawa, Hiroshi Ito, Kazushi Noda

Patent number: 4688127Abstract: A magnetic recording disk cartridge comprises a flexible recording disk having a cylindrical hub secured to the central portion thereof, and a casing in which the recording disk is accommodated. The cartridge is provided with a locking member comprising a pair of resilient arms which are fixed to the casing and are urged toward each other to grip therebetween the hub to fix the recording disk with respect to the casing so that the surfaces of the recording disk are not brought into contact with the inner surface of the casing, and a releasing member movable between an inoperative position in which it is operatively removed from the resilient arms and an operative position in which it urges the resilient arms away from the hub to release the recording disk from the locking member. The releasing member is arranged to be automatically moved to the operative position when the cartridge is loaded in a system using it, e.g., an electronic camera.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1983Date of Patent: August 18, 1987Assignee: Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd.Inventors: Kengo Oishi, Tuyoshi Ono
