Abstract: A magnetic tape drive includes a head assembly with a write head and a read head. The read head is positioned ahead of the write head, so that as a magnetic tape is moved across the head, the read head is able to read data that is about to be overwritten by the write head. When a client computer system commands the tape drive to write data to the magnetic tape, the tape drive writes the data to the tape but preserves any data that is overwritten by reading the data before it is overwritten. The preserved data is returned to the client computer system. In various examples, the returned data can be written back to the tape, discarded, or stored elsewhere under the control of the client computer system.

  • Patent number: 6167186
Abstract: An input image is digitized. The corresponding digital video data are reproduced while they are successively recorded on a magnetic video device. A successive recording control unit manages at which position of a successive recording area the digital data are to be successively recorded to realize the endless recording in a limitative recording area. When an event occurs, the control unit manages to exclude the recorded image before and after the corresponding event image from the endless recording area so that the event image can be held as an event recording image. Since the monitored image can be reproduced while it is recorded, it can be reproduced timely retroactively, and the image before and after an event occurs can also be reproduced instantaneously. Further, since the recording is continued while the image is reproduced, event images corresponding to plural events can be left.

  • Patent number: 6072645
Abstract: A retroactive recording device, having a main recording medium, temporarily stores past information in a memory. In particular, an audio tape recorder includes a solid state retroactive memory which is operated continuously to temporarily store a past time interval of digital audio information. To begin retroactive recording, all or a portion of the past information stored in the retroactive memory is transferred to the recording medium. After transferring the desired past information, recording is continued in real time. In one embodiment, where the recording medium is a magnetic audio tape, temporarily stored past information is transferred to the audio tape by operating the audio tape transport mechanism at a higher than normal speed so as to catch up to present time. In another embodiment, where the recording medium is a non-volatile memory, temporarily stored past audio information is transferred to the non-volatile memory, and the present recording is continued in real time.
