Patent number: 11062733Abstract: In a disk drive, when an off-track error occurs during a sequential disk access operation that spans multiple contiguous data tracks, efficient recovery is performed. In an embodiment, the disk access operation (e.g., reading from or writing to a disk) is attempted for all sectors of the sequential disk access operation. The disk access operation is then attempted again for sectors associated with any off-track errors that occurred during the disk access operation. In another embodiment, when an off-track error occurs during a sequential write operation in a shingled magnetic recording drive, the data originally targeted to be written to a first portion is written to a second portion of the data track that follows the first portion. Since no additional revolutions of the disk are needed for data associated with the sequential write operation to be written to the disk.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 2020Date of Patent: July 13, 2021Assignees: KABUSHIKI KAISHA TOSHIBA, TOSHIBA ELECTRONIC DEVICES & STORAGE CORPORATIONInventor: Richard M. Patent number: 8009376Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention help to improve the capacity and the performance of a disk drive device. According to one embodiment, a data track pitch is set to each recording surface. The recording surfaces are divided into bands. A hard disk drive (HDD) sequentially moves a head to an adjacent data track in a band and performs a head switch at the band end in its data accessing. On a recording surface, the number of data tracks in each band is variable; and each band is constituted by different number of data tracks as necessary. The number of data tracks in each band is set so that the radial position of the band end comes close to the radial position of the corresponding band end on another recording surface. Accordingly, even if the recording surfaces have different variation rates of the data track pitch in the radial direction, increase in process time due to head switches can be suppressed.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 2008Date of Patent: August 30, 2011Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, Netherlands, B.V.Inventors: Takahiro Saito, Kazunari Tsuchimoto, Atsushi Kanamaru

Patent number: 7466506Abstract: A magnetic recording disk drive has disks with identical pre-patterned servo patterns on their front and back surfaces and a servo control system for positioning the read/write heads using the servo signals from the identical servo patterns. The servo sectors on the two disk surfaces form identical patterns of angularly spaced arcuate-shaped lines that extend generally radially across the data tracks. The arcuate-shaped lines on one surface, the front surface, generally replicate the path of the recording head as it is moved across the data tracks by a rotary actuator, so that there is a constant sampling rate of the servo sectors on the front surface regardless of radial position of the head. However, the arcuate-shaped lines on the other surface, the back surface, do not replicate the path of the recording head so the servo sampling rate is not constant but varies with radial position of the head.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 2007Date of Patent: December 16, 2008Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Thomas R. Patent number: 7280298Abstract: A set of coils wind around a magnetic core in a thin film magnetic head. Current supplying circuits are separately connected to the individual coils. The individual coils get shorter in the overall length as compared with the case where a set of coils consist of a single conductor. The impedance of the coils can be reduced. The reduction in the impedance enables the flow of the electric current to be established in a moment within the coils. The magnetic field of a sufficient intensity can be generated in a moment. Magnetization of a sufficient intensity can thus be established on a magnetic recording medium even when the frequency of a signal for recordation gets higher.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 2003Date of Patent: October 9, 2007Assignee: Fujitsu LimitedInventors: Michinaga Yamagishi, Takenori Ohshima

Patent number: 7212368Abstract: A method and system of switching heads in a hard disk drive written using an off-line STW method. In the method, first, deviations between a reference head and each of the heads are calculated. Next, a mapping table having the deviations between the reference head and each of the heads is generated and stored in a memory. Thereafter, when a head switching operation is requested, a current head is switched to a new head to access a track whose number is the same as the track assessed by the current head. A deviation of a track on which the head is positioned, recorded in the mapping table, is applied to the virtual track address of the track on which the head is positioned, thereby obtaining the physical track address of the track on which the head is positioned. The requested track is then accessed based on the obtained physical track address.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2003Date of Patent: May 1, 2007Assignee: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.Inventor: Jae-hyeong Kim

Patent number: 7075747Abstract: A disk device that has displacement of servo signals in the circumference direction and radius direction between a plurality of disks, prevents a drop in performance due to the displacement when the heads are switched. To deal with the displacement in the circumference direction, the sector numbers on the disk are converted by a table for each head. Also the servo gate time is corrected by the table according to the eccentricity of the disk, so the servo signal detection accuracy improves. Also to deal with the displacement in the radius direction, the track numbers on the disk are converted by the table using the difference value based on the reference head.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 2003Date of Patent: July 11, 2006Assignee: Fujitsu LimitedInventor: Kazuhiko Takaishi

Patent number: 6980386Abstract: A disc drive has transducers supported by an actuator to fly proximate data tracks on surfaces of rotating information storage discs. Each of the discs is partitioned into concentric regions. A control system arranges the deposition of data in write operations to the tracks on the disc surfaces, as data is written to the discs, such that the data is sequentially organized both on the tracks and within each of the regions. The control system writes data from a track adjacent a first region boundary in a first direction to a second region boundary until all tracks in a region are full. The control system executes a head switch between adjacent surfaces of the discs. The write sequence is repeated in each adjacent region until all regions are full. The resulting trapezoidal serpentine pattern of actuator movement and head switches is repeated until all of the write operations are complete.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 2003Date of Patent: December 27, 2005Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: Joseph L Wach, Khalil B Dizaji

Patent number: 6970311Abstract: A recording system of a magnetic tape drive is operated to cause one separate set of write heads to write data discontinuously to magnetic tape as received, and to save the data, and, during the same operation, to cause another separate set of write heads to rewrite data to magnetic tape in a continuous arrangement. The writing may be in parallel and simultaneous. Thus, during the same operation, and at the same time, the separate sets of the plurality of write heads, temporarily write the received data to magnetic tape so that the sender can erase its copy, and rewrite the saved data to the magnetic tape in a permanent arrangement, without waiting to complete first writing received data, to complete subsequently rewriting the data, and repeating.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 2003Date of Patent: November 29, 2005Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Glen Alan Jaquette

Patent number: 6952320Abstract: The present invention relates to repeatable runout (RRO) compensation of servo control systems that can be used in disc drives or spin-stands. The RRO relates to eccentricity between servo tracks, which were written onto a disc prior to the installation of the disc into the disc drive or spin-stand, and an axis of rotation of the disc. The present invention compensates the servo control loop by canceling the RRO and controlling a head to follow virtual tracks which are eccentric to the data tracks defined by the servo tracks and concentric with the axis of rotation of the disc.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 2000Date of Patent: October 4, 2005Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: Brian Pollock, Alexei H. Patent number: 6950258Abstract: In a head positioning method and device in which the position of servo signals between heads is not uniform, it is aimed to reduce the time taken to find the servo signals when heads are switched. A storage disk device comprises storage disks with the servo signals, a plurality of heads that read the information from the storage disks, an actuator that moves the heads, and a control circuit that positions the heads based on the servo signals read from the storage disks by a selected head. This control circuit includes a synchronization circuit that, in response to a head switching cue, synchronizes the time of a servo gate signal (of the head to which switching is directed) for detecting a servo signal with the time of the servo signal read by the head to which switching is directed, and a processing circuit that reads the servo signal for the head in response to the synchronized detection signal and positions the head in response to the servo signal read.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 2001Date of Patent: September 27, 2005Assignee: Fujitsu LimitedInventor: Kazuhiko Takaishi

Patent number: 6934105Abstract: The present invention decreases the number of repositions during read back by making use of multiple read elements associated with each data track. A tape system includes a tape head with two read elements associated with each data track to be simultaneously read. Each read element generates a read signal in response to information recorded on the data track. Read electronics convert the read signal into read data. Control logic selects one of the two read elements as a source for output data for each data track. In response to a read error, output data is obtained from the other of the two read elements.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 2002Date of Patent: August 23, 2005Assignee: Storage Technology CorporationInventor: James C. Patent number: 6917485Abstract: An apparatus and method for dynamic head switch timing recalibration are provided. With the apparatus and method, a determination is made as to whether a difference in a reference head switch timing and the head switch timing at a later time is sufficient to meet a certain criteria. If the difference meets the criteria, a recalibration of the head switch timing is performed. For example, in a preferred embodiment, the criteria is a number of address mark (AM) misses during a head switch operation. If this predetermined number of AM misses is detected, then it is determined that a recalibration is necessary since the predetermined number of AM misses is an indication that the head switch timing has changed significantly from the reference head switch timing.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2003Date of Patent: July 12, 2005Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: David Louis Schell, Chris Thomas Settje, Steven Alan Koldewyn, Kar Wei Koay, Abhay T. Patent number: 6903892Abstract: The present invention decreases the number of repositions during read back by making use of multiple read elements associated with each data track. Each of a plurality of sets of read electronics receives the read signal from either one or the other of the two read elements associated with each data track and converts the received read signal into read data. For each data track, control logic selects one of the two read elements as a source for output data. In response to a determination that a read error has occurred, the control logic selects the other of the two read elements as the source for output data. For each data track, one read element is offset relative to the other read element in an offset direction normal to the tape direction.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 2002Date of Patent: June 7, 2005Assignee: Storage Technology CorporationInventor: James C.
