Tape Record Patents (Class 360/90)
  • Patent number: 10146458
Abstract: A method includes receiving, by a read threshold number of storage units of a dispersed storage network (DSN), the read threshold number of read requests regarding the read threshold number of encoded data slices of a set of encoded data slices. The method further includes determining, by each storage unit of the read threshold number of storage units, whether the storage unit is capable of processing a respective read request. When a particular storage unit is not capable of processing the respective read request, the method further includes sending, by the particular storage unit, a proxy read request to another storage unit that is not in the read threshold number of storage units. The method further includes determining, by the other storage unit, whether the other storage unit is capable of processing the proxy read request and, when it is, processing the proxy read request.

Abstract: A tape appliance includes first and second tape guide components. The tape path includes a first path portion between a tape supply reel and the first guide component, a second path portion between a tape take-up reel and the second guide component, and a joining path portion between the first and second guide components. When tape travel is in the first longitudinal direction, a first tape head module engages the tape along one of the first or second tape path portions, and a second tape head module engages the tape along the joining path portion, such that the first tape head module is the leading module. When the tape travel is in the reverse direction, the first tape head module is positioned to engage the tape along the other of the first or second tape path portions, such that the first tape head module remains the leading module.

The tape drive utilizes servo information to determine if the tape has expanded or contracted from the nominal dimension and to determine the magnitude of the expansion or contraction. In the case of expansion, the magnitude of the determined expansion and the stored maximum amount of contraction must be below a predetermined threshold value to allow a write. In the case of contraction, the magnitude of the determined contraction and the stored magnitude of expansion must be below the same predetermined threshold value to allow a write. If the determined magnitude of contraction or expansion is greater than the stored magnitude of contraction or expansion, respectively, then the new extreme is stored.

Abstract: Provided is a thin-film magnetic head in which the magnetic spacing can be appropriately controlled by dynamically and accordingly, by adjusting the pressure working between the thin-film magnetic head and the magnetic recording medium according to the change of conditions such as the change over time. The thin-film magnetic head comprises at least one cavity for adjusting a pressure working between the thin-film magnetic head and the magnetic recording medium, provided in a surface of the head opposed to the magnetic recording medium, and a volume of the at least one cavity being variable. When the magnetic recording medium passes through near the cavity, the cavity generates a (negative) pressure that attracts the head and the medium toward each other. The amount of the negative pressure depends on the volume of the cavity; thus, a magnetic spacing dMS can be controlled dynamically and accordingly by adjusting the volume.

Abstract: There is disclosed a tape guide roller for guiding a tape (11) in a tape storage. The tape guide roller is tiltable such that by tilting the tape guide roller the tape (11) may be returned from a laterally offset position to a centered position. An actuator (1560) of the tiltable tape guide roller is implemented as a magnetic actuator with a permanent magnet assembly (1570) and an electromagnet a pole piece (1702) of which electromagnet is facing the magnet assembly (1570). The width (W1) of the pole piece (1702) is smaller than the width (W2) of the magnet assembly (1570). As a result the tape guide roller may be operated in a power efficient way.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to provide a tape drive capable of securely pressing and holding a thin-type or a thick-type loaded tape cartridge being different in case thicknesses, so as to be vertically immovable. The tape drive D accommodates within it a loading frame 28 for receiving and supporting each tape cartridge 40A, 40B being different in case thicknesses and a holder 29 for holding the tape cartridge 40A, 40B by pressing the cartridge. The side wall 31 of the loading frame is provided with a pair of upper and lower sensors 34, 35 for identifying the thin-type and the thick-type loaded tape cartridges. The holder 29 is displaced to a height position matching with the loaded tape cartridge 40A, 40B based on the tape cartridge size detected by the sensors 34, 35.

Abstract: A method is presented for setting a wrap angle of a read/write head having a servo element and multiple read elements, where the servo element and the read elements can detect a servo signal. The method includes moving a sequential information storage medium having a longitudinal axis and a servo band encoded therein adjacent to the read/write head. The longitudinal axis and a flat upper surface of the read write head define the wrap angle. The method further includes detecting the servo signal using one of the read elements. If the read element is unable to detect the servo signal, then the remaining read elements are sensed to detect the servo signal.

A flat magnetic pattern writing surface has a magnetic gap contoured to correspond to the servo pattern, and is disposed to allow the magnetic tape to slidably contact therewith. Sloped surfaces are disposed upstream and downstream of the magnetic pattern writing surface in a magnetic tape transport direction at positions retreated from a position of the magnetic pattern writing surface. The sloped surfaces extend obliquely relative to the magnetic pattern writing surface. Connecting surfaces curved gently to smoothly connect the sloped surfaces to the magnetic pattern writing surface are disposed between the magnetic pattern writing surface and each of the sloped surfaces.

  • Patent number: 7986482
Abstract: As the result of a tape stick condition of magnetic tape with respect to a tape head, the supply reel and the take-up reel apply a base tension to the magnetic tape therebetween of substantially less than a full tension that occurs when the tape is running, and one reel varies the applied tension greater than and less than the base tension by an amount less than the base tension. The variation of the applied tension comprises first applying the greater tension and in succession, second, applying the less tension, comprising a whip effect. The whip effect may be in accordance with a sine wave. The varied tension is less than the base tension to maintain positive tension.

Abstract: A tape path control system and related method for controlling the position of a tape medium in the tape drive. The tape path includes a first tape guide roller, a second tape guide roller spaced from the first roller, and a transducing head situated between the first and second rollers. The first and second rollers may be large and closely spaced, with the second tape guide roller being spaced from the first roller at a roller diameter/center-to-center spacing ratio of between approximately 1:1-1:2 while still accommodating the transducing head therebetween. A precision alignment system is associated with the second roller. When operable, the precision alignment system allows the second roller to be adjustably aligned relative to the first roller in order to control lateral tape movement when a tape medium streams across the rollers in operative engagement with the transducing head.
