With Capacitor Charging Or Discharging Through Coil Patents (Class 361/156)
  • Patent number: 4191912
Abstract: A distributorless ignition system has an alternating current power source for providing power to fire the igniters. The alternating current power source is coupled through a capacitor to a plurality of ignition transformers, one transformer for each igniter. Each transformer has an electronic switch in its primary winding circuit initiated by independent logic means for each switch. A timer, driven by the engine, triggers one logic circuit at a time so that only one electronic switch and consequently one igniter is fired at such one time, maintaining the other logic circuits and electronic switches quiescent during such firing. The system has short lengths of high tension wires connecting each ignition transformer secondary winding to its respective igniter.

  • Patent number: 4186420
Abstract: The coil of a relay is activated by a DC voltage directly through a primary switch, which voltage is also applied through a diode to charge a capacitor. A transistor biased by the same DC voltage is connected across the charging diode, but poled for conduction in the opposite direction. When the power is removed from the relay coil and the charging diode, the transistor is forward biased and conducts the charge from the capacitor through the relay to keep the relay energized until such time as the capacitor charge equals the transistor bias; then the transistor cuts off and the relay opens immediately. Relay energization is independent of the transistor; if the transistor fails open, the relay is disenergized instantaneously; if the transistor fails shorted, the relay is deenergized when the capacitor voltage drops below the dropout voltage of the relay; therefore, the circuit is fail safe.

  • Patent number: 4165528
Abstract: A fault indicator for alternating current distribution systems includes a pair of spaced pole pieces for receiving therebetween at one end the conductor and at the other end a pivoted permanent magnet carrying a target that is biased to a fault indicating position by a stationary permanent magnet. The pole pieces are demagnetized on flow of fault current in the conductor. They are remagnetized by a winding which is energized by discharge of a capacitor that is charged through a rectifier from an oscillator circuit. The winding is carried by a receptacle into which the other ends of the pole pieces are inserted and a circuit is completed thereby to charge the capacitor. The receptacle is carried at one end of a tubular housing the other end of which has an eye to receive a claw of a live line tool for applying the fault indicator to and removing it from the conductor.

  • Patent number: 4157579
Abstract: A pulse generator for energizing a coil with periodic bipolar current pulses of predetermined aplitude, period and repetition rate and of generally square wave form. The coil to be energized is connected in parallel with a capacitor to form a closed under damped tuned circuit of predetermined frequency. Current flowing through the coil is suddenly interrupted, causing a sinusoidal voltage to be generated across the tuned circuit. The current flowing through the coil rapidly changes according to a cosine function. At a time when the current has reached its maximum positive or negative value or slightly before, controlled rectifiers in the circuit between the power source and the tuned circuit are caused to conduct thus maintaining the current in the coil at a level substantially equal to the maximum value. At the end of a predetermined interval, the supply of direct current to the tuned circuit again abruptly is interrupted, thus defining another edge of a pulse.

  • Patent number: 4148091
Abstract: An electromagnetic force (EMF) machine with a universal portable power supply is disclosed. The universal portable power supply energizes either a multiple turn flux concentrator or a single turn flux concentrator. The flux concentrators produce magnetic fields that create an outward tension force adapted to perform non-destructive bond tests (tension proof loading) and/or dent removal operations on panels or the like. The power supply includes a slow current pulse subsystem; a fast current pulse subsystem; slow and fast crowbars; and, a firing control. The firing control controls the production of pulses by the slow and a fast current pulse subsystems, and, the operation of the slow and fast crowbars. The slow pulse subsystem, via the flux concentrator, slowly creates a magnetic field that penetrates the panel; the fast pulse subsystem, via the flux concentrator, rapidly decreases the magnetic field, whereby a negative field gradient is produced across the panel.

  • Patent number: 4138708
Abstract: A drive circuit for a solenoid pump comprises a series combination of a pump solenoid and a capacitor connected through a rectifier circuit with an a.c. source. The solenoid is shunted by another rectifier poled to pass a charging current to the capacitor. A thyristor is connected across the series combination, and is triggered into conduction, whereupon it short-circuits the series combination to permit a discharge of the capacitor through the solenoid and to prevent a current flow from the source to the capacitor, thus allowing a uniform control of the energy discharged by the capacitor. A trigger circuit for the thyristor comprises a relaxation oscillator including a programmable unijunction transistor, the conduction of which is controlled inversely to fluctuations in the source voltage.

  • Patent number: 4133020
Abstract: A control switch has a switch shaft carrying radially positioned contacts and mounted for reciprocal rotational movement about its axis. A cam profile is fixed to the shaft and has first and second opposed cam surfaces. A driver is mounted to selectively engage the first or second cam surface to drive the switch shaft into a first clockwise position or a second counterclockwise position by remote actuation. The driver is connected to a rotary solenoid and a linear solenoid which allow uni-directional drive translated into two directional drive by the driver. One form of control circuit operates a rotary solenoid and a linear solenoid through a trip and close switch. A first relay is responsive to actuation of the trip switch means or close switch means to energize the rotary solenoid and index the switch shaft to a preselected position holding that position for a preselected time after which the shaft returns to its original position regardless of whether or not the trip switch or close switch are deactuated.
