Patent number: 4225090Abstract: A device for painting by electrostatic powder spraying wherein a passage for triboelectrifying powder particles is formed in an electrically conductive housing and is surrounded by an electric insulator layer of a synthetic macromolecular material, such as nylon or fluorocarbon resin, containing powder of an electrically conductive material, such as copper, aluminum or carbon. As the electrostatic powder moves through the passage, it frictionally engages the insulator layer and causes an electric charge on the surface of the electric insulator, due to the triboelectrification movement in the electric insulator, and a current flows to the powder. Therefore, powder particles can be continuously triboelectrified without suppling any voltage or with supplying a very low voltage for forming an electric field.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 1979Date of Patent: September 30, 1980Assignee: Toyota Jidosha Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Hiroyoshi Kako, Nobuo Kobayashi

Patent number: 4224655Abstract: In the production and transportation of crude oil and natural gas in dry, cold areas, such as for example, the North Slope of Alaska, static electricity inside equipment like tanks and flowlines is a special problem when it is necessary to gain access to the inside of such equipment. Safer and faster access to the inside of such equipment is facilitated by removing petroleum fluids from the equipment and wetting the appropriate inside area of access of the equipment with a nonflammable liquid that facilitates discharge of the electrostatic potential. For example, the liquid may be a salt solution, an antistatic chemical solution, a solution of conductivity improvers, or a combination thereof. The nonflammable liquid must be flowed (preferably upwardly) into the area of access as a continuous stream of liquid. In other words, the nonflammable liquid is not atomized or turned into a spray. Sprays create electrostatic charges.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 1979Date of Patent: September 23, 1980Assignee: Atlantic Richfield CompanyInventor: Rado G. Loncaric

Patent number: 4137773Abstract: When liquid petroleum samples are taken from petroleum producing and transporting equipment in cold, dry areas, for example, northern Alaska, there is a danger of electrostatic sparking and explosion of the flammable liquids being sampled. This hazard is reduced by gentle sampling techniques and cooling the sample. The liquid sample line is cooled and the flow rate of the petroleum liquid is prevented from exceeding 1 meter per second. In addition, the liquid is flowed upward in the sample container thereby preventing flashing, agitation, and higher flow rates. For added safety, the sample container or the container and sample line may be prefilled with a noncombustible fluid. The container may also be made of metal and connected by an electrical conductor directly or indirectly to the equipment being sampled.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1977Date of Patent: February 6, 1979Assignee: Atlantic Richfield CompanyInventor: Rado G. Patent number: 4107452Abstract: A fitting for the end of a plastic pipe segment includes a body having an open-ended bore in which the pipe segment is received. A wedge-shaped grip ring and annular gasket are fitted over the pipe segment and compresses against an annular shoulder provided in the sidewall of the bore by a compression nut threaded into the open end of the bore.
