Patent number: 5583729Abstract: A terminal bushing having integral overvoltage and fault current protection includes an insulator having an upper and a lower chamber. Nonlinear resistors are disposed in the upper chamber between a top terminal and an intermediate terminal which are mounted on the insulator. The top terminal, the nonlinear resistors and the intermediate terminal form a first current path through the bushing. The bushing also includes a pair of mounting arms which support a current limiting dropout fuseholder. The fuseholder is disposed in series between the top terminal and a bushing stud which is retained in the lower chamber of the bushing body. A second current path through the bushing is thus formed by the top terminal, the fuseholder and the bushing stud.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1993Date of Patent: December 10, 1996Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventors: Stephen P. Patent number: 4980789Abstract: A two-stage gapped low voltage surge arrester for dissipating transformer secondary side current surges includes an arc strap in series with a resistive grommet. The combination is mounted on the grounded transformer housing adjacent a line potential bushing such that a first spark gap is formed between the bushing stud and arc strap. The resistive grommet is grounded to the transformer ground pad by metallic fasteners such that a second spark gap is formed in parallel with the resistive grommet. Surges entering the transformer secondary winding of sufficient magnitude induce the first spark gap to flash over, shunting potentially damaging currents outside the transformer through the arc strap and resistive grommet. At even higher currents, the voltage across the resistive grommet exceeds the flash over voltage of the second spark gap and shunts the surge around the resistive grommet.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 1989Date of Patent: December 25, 1990Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventors: Phillip J. Hopkinson, Stephen D. Smith, George W. Mayall, deceased

Patent number: 4401963Abstract: A protective fuse comprising a fusible element disposed within an enclosure formed by a gas generating fiber tube connected at one end to a conductor rod and at the other end to an arc intercepting member. The arc intercepting member is connected to an elongated tubular resistor element which in turn is connected at its opposite end to a cap comprising a conductor connected to the fusible element. Upon parting of the fusible element an arc established by the fault current comes into contact with the arc intercepting member so that a circuit is established through the resistor element thereby momentarily reducing the fault current to a level which can be extinguished by the deionizing gases generated within the interior of the fuse. The conductor rod is formed of a magnetic material which is capable of generating a substantial magnetic flux which functions to bias the arc against the interior wall of the fiber tube to enhance the generation of deionizing gases.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1981Date of Patent: August 30, 1983Assignee: Warco, Inc.Inventor: Clarence G.
