  • Patent number: 4869662
Abstract: A flame extinguishing device for use with an ornamental lamp having a base, a chimney, and a wick which provides a lamp flame, includes a plate coupled inside of the chimney below the flame. The plate has a hole in the center thereof surrounding the flame but below the flame. As the plate is lifted above the flame, a low pressure area is formed below the plate. The pressure differential between the bottom of the plate and the top of the plate causes combustion by-products above the flame to flow downward through the hole. As the combustion by-products flow past the flame, oxygen is temporarily prevented from reaching the flame, thus extinguishing it. Therefore, extinguishing the flame is a simple matter of lifting the chimney an inch or so. The plate may include side holes which prevent the flame from being extinguished when the chimney and plate are placed on the lamp when the flame is burning.

  • Patent number: 4520431
Abstract: A cylindrical container of liquid fuel has a removable closure through which projects a tubular fitting supporting an adjustable wick. A set of spring metal support members are mounted on the container and have movable leg portions supporting a cylindrical transparent globe for axial movement between a collapsed position surrounding the container and an elevated position when the leg portions spring outwardly to form a stabilized support. A cover plate mounts on the globe and is retained by a cap member which engages the fitting and seals with the closure when the globe is in its collapsed position. A flexible chain connects the cap member to an L-shaped wire arm pivotally supported by one of the support members for movement between a collapsed position on top of the cover plate to an extended position where the chain may be used to suspend the lantern.

  • Patent number: 4393439
Abstract: A hydrocarbon-burning lantern is convertible from a broadcast configuration to a spotlight configuration. The cover, glass housing, and bail of a conventional lantern are removed and replaced with a semi-spherical reflector having a glass-covered opening and a handle. A ring clamps the glass window against the open face of the reflector. A number of vent openings are provided in the reflector to cool the lantern and permit the lantern to be lighted. The handle permits the lantern to be maneuvered effectively.

  • Patent number: 4321656
Abstract: A gaseous lantern ventilator including an outer shell concentrically spaced over an inner metal liner which collects and exhausts the hot gases from the burner assembly through a chimney, the upper end of which is surrounded by an annular opening in the outer shell. The rising hot gases will entrain outside cool air drawn between the shell and liner, thereby cooling the liner and substantially reducing the surface temperature of the outside shell.
