    Abstract: A xenon arc search lamp has a lamp beam focused by relative movement of a reflector by advancing or retracting it along its optical axis of symmetry on which the lamp is aligned. The battery and lamp assemblies are field replaceable without tools. The beam output is usable with a combination of filters to allow the most varied intensity and wavelengths for a particular application, such as smoke filled environments, infrared illuminations and underwater illuminations. The xenon arc lamp is oriented within the searchlight with respect to the reflector to provide the most uniform field of illumination on which the lamp is capable, namely with the anode of the lamp turned away from the forward beam direction in the reflector.

    Abstract: A xenon arc searchlight or illumination system incorporates a high frequency/high efficiency electronic circuit that allows lamp ballasting and charging of the system battery to occur over a wide range of external DC power supplies. The tolerance to variations in the system battery voltage as well as external battery voltage are increased by providing logic control of the converter circuit through a programmed logic device. The intensity of the arc lamp is smoothly decreased or increased in a continuous manner from a maximum intensity to a minimum intensity beam. Ignition of the lamp at its minimum illumination levels is thereby permitted. The xenon arc lamp is uniquely oriented within the searchlight with respect to the reflector to provide the most concentrated and convergent field of illumination on which the lamp is capable, namely with the anode of the lamp turned away from the forward beam direction in the reflector.

The beam adjustment assembly mounts inside the flashlight head and can only be accessed and adjusted by removing the outer lens retaining ring that secures the assembly within the head. Once accessed, the bulb support of the assembly can be rotated relative to the reflector of the assembly to adjust the light focal length of the flashlight. The adjustment assembly is also provided with a shock absorber that supports the light bulb. In one embodiment, the endcap is provided with a threads to permit the flashlight to be axially attached to an expandable baton.

    Abstract: An adjustable beam flashlight according to this invention is based in part on the teachings of Ellion U.S. Pat. Nos. 4,984,140 and 5,459,649 but adds important new concepts to describe a theoretical reflector having a broad beam that is uniformly illuminated with no bright and dull rings and no unilluminated center disc. This theoretical reflector requires manufacturing tolerances that are not available with conventional machine tools. A method is described to modify this theoretical reflector so that a practical reflector can be produced using existing machine tools. In one embodiment, the practical reflector surface is made up of a multitude of small concentric cones which reflect the light in the form of small fans. A uniformly illuminated broad beam is formed by fabricating specific groups of these cones of varying size and slope to form the reflector surface in order to project the light so as to overlap the required number of fans to produce the uniformity of illumination.

    Abstract: A multi-function lighting device includes a barrel, a lamp mounted on one end of the barrel, a tubular coupling member secured around one end of the barrel, a tubular sleeve member made of a light transmittable material and sleeved slidably on the coupling member, and a head cap secured to one end of the sleeve member and provided with a reflector therein. The sleeve member is shiftable with respect to the coupling member between a first position, wherein the lamp extends into the reflector so that light may be directed axially, and a second position, wherein the lamp is located in the sleeve member so that light can pass transversely through the sleeve member. The barrel houses a battery therein, and a switch assembly is mounted in the barrel and is connected electrically to the battery and the lamp. The switch assembly is operable so as to interconnect electrically and selectively the battery and the lamp and so as to cause the lamp to generate one of a constant light output and a blinking light output.
