The generator is designed and operated to charge th batteries at a high rate for a short time to provide extended operation of the load during a later discharging mode. The batteries also serve to regulate the voltage during the charging mode thus protecting the load if it be connected during the charging period. The battery assembly can provide the necessary energy to operate such devices as radio receivers and transmitters, electric fire starters, etc., as well as providing a mechanical output.

  • Patent number: 4332006
Abstract: A portable mechanical light generating device includes an electrical generator located in a portable housing. The generator is activated by way of a rotatable shaft which rotates an armature within a magnetic field in order to produce electricity. A coil spring is adapted to be wound tightly and then slowly unwind. While unwinding, the spring turns a succession of gears in order to rotate the shaft associated with the generator. As a result, the slow unwinding of the spring allows the generation of electricity over sustained periods of time.

  • Patent number: 4325108
Abstract: To provide an easily removed and supervisable electrical battery unit for a bicycle, for selective connection to a bicycle generator, a unitary housing (1) retaining battery cells (4) is mounted on the handle bar support posts (17, 19) by rearwardly extending wing-like projections, through which a bolt (23, 28) is passed reaching around the rear of the post (17, 19) to releasably and firmly secure the housing to the bicycle. The top wall of the housing carries two monitoring lamps, one indicating the charge state of the battery and the other proper functioning of the illumination circuit and, especially, of the tail light of the bicycle. The battery unit, thus, with the monitoring light, is continuously within the field of vision of the bicycle rider.

  • Patent number: 4315301
Abstract: A self-generating hand-held flashlight including the optional use of battery power. The flashlight includes a tubular body case that may be divided into three compartments. In a first compartment a generator utilizing a permanent magnet armature is mounted. This generator is electrically tied to a bulb at one end of the flashlight. The generator is powered by rotation of a central shaft coupled to a flywheel, the flywheel being located within a second and larger compartment of the flashlight body case. The flywheel is rotated by manual energy coupled to the flywheel through a power wheel and slip-clutch, both of which are also located within the second and larger compartment. Various manual means are used to rotate the power wheel. The flywheel is adapted to have a maximum inertia, thereby allowing it to rotate for a substantial period of time once initialized.

  • Patent number: 4069451
Abstract: A bicycle generator circuit is disclosed for providing a regulated output voltage to a bicycle mounted appliance. The circuit includes a zener diode which is coupled through input filtering and limiting resistors to the output of the bicycle generator to reduce the high peaks of pulsating voltage from the ouptut of the bicycle generator. A rectifier is coupled through a filtering and limiting resistor to the zener diode to rectify the pulsating voltage to provide an effective DC voltage and prevent reverse leakage from the battery actuated appliance when the generator is not in a charging mode. A capacitor is coupled to the output of the rectifier and across the output terminals of the circuit to eliminate noise and provide a smooth DC output voltage which is coupled to the appliance to provide direct energization and/or a charging voltage for a battery actuated appliance.
