Abstract: A planar sample, particularly of the type used in biological laboratories for detection and sometimes analysis of two-dimensional arrays of proteins, nucleic acids, or other biological species, is illuminated by epi-illumination using optically filtered line lights that are arranged along opposing parallel sides of a rectangle in which the sample array resides, with two coaxial line lights on each side of the rectangle, and the two on any given side being separated by a gap whose optimal width depends on the wavelength band transmitted by the optical filter. Surprisingly, the gap eliminates the peak in intensity at the center of the sample area and the decrease that occurs from the center outward that would otherwise occur with a single continuous filtered line light, producing instead a substantially uniform intensity along the direction parallel to the line lights.

Abstract: A lamp 1 includes a semiconductor light-emitting element 12 as a light source, a circuit unit 40 that causes the semiconductor light-emitting element 12 to emit light, and an envelope 2 having an outer tube 30 and a base 60. The semiconductor light-emitting element 12 and the circuit unit 40 are housed in the envelope 2. The semiconductor light-emitting element 12 is disposed in a region at a side of an axially central section of the outer tube 30 facing the base 60 and oriented so that a main emission direction points away from the base 60. At least one component of the circuit unit 40 is disposed in a region at a side of the axially central section of the outer tube opposite the semiconductor light-emitting element 12. A light guide 50 that guides emission light of the semiconductor light-emitting element 12 along the axial direction is disposed between the at least one component of the circuit unit 40 and the semiconductor light-emitting element 12.

Abstract: This invention provides a vapor-tight luminaire with a housing that defines a continuous and unbroken sealed tubular lens extending in a longitudinal direction. The housing includes a pair of end cap structures removably and sealably mounted on each of opposing respective housing ends. The housing removably supports a lamp assembly that can include various reflector arrangements. The lamp assembly can include fluorescent tubular lamps and can include electronics, such as a ballast circuit. Illustratively, a supporting rail suspended from each of the opposing housing ends by respective posts slidably supports the lamp assembly. In this manner each of the housing and the lamp assembly are constructed and arranged to allow the lamp assembly to be passed into and out of the housing along the supporting rail when at least one of the end cap structures is removed from the respective one of the housing ends.

  • Patent number: 8220957
Abstract: Retrofit systems for replacing the outdated components of an existing light fixture. The retrofit systems may utilize the previously installed housing of the existing light fixture. The retrofit systems include brackets that are positioned on the ends of the housing. The positioning of the brackets is based off of the ceiling, t-grid, or the bottom of the housing. Lamp sockets with associated lamps, an optional ballast tray with associated ballast, reflector(s), lamps, and a shielding mechanism are all mounted on, and their position in the housing dictated by, the mounting brackets. Thus, regardless of the depth of the housing, the lamps are positioned a uniform distance from the ceiling opening to create consistent light distribution. Moreover, because these components are not directly attached to the housing, their dimensions need not precisely match those of the housing. Rather, the retrofit system can be installed in housings of varying sizes and shapes.
