Illuminated Scale Or Dial Patents (Class 362/23)
  • Patent number: 7347160
Abstract: It is possible to eliminate the problem that a conductive part to a light source is subjected to stress by operation of a needle-pointer, thereby improving reliability. A needle-pointer type meter includes: an indicator plate having a first see-through portion and an indicator portion surrounding the first see-through portion; a rotary body having a second see-through portion corresponding to the first see-through portion; a drive device for moving the rotary body; a needle-pointer mounted on the rotary body and moving along the indicator portion around the first see-through portion; light sources illuminating the needle-pointer; and a display device for displaying predetermined information to an observer via the see-through portions. A plurality of light sources are arranged at an interval along the movement route of the needle-pointer. The needle-pointer is made of translucent material which emits light when receiving light from a predetermined light source of the plurality of light sources while moving.

Abstract: When a polarization axis of a first polarizing plate is parallel to that of a second polarizing plate, a light emitted from a backlight is transmitted, on the other hand, when a polarization axis of the first polarizing plate is orthogonal with that of the second polarizing plate, a light emitted from the backlight is mostly blocked off. A character and scale are constructed by a ½? phase difference plate, so that the emitted light from the backlight, which enters to the character and scale, has a deflection direction reverse to that of the first polarizing plate. When the light emitted from the backlight is blocked, differently from a conventional artificial (pseudo) black color, a color extremely close to black color is seen. The contrast ratio and visibility are improved.

In one commonly employed technique, an appliqué may be formed by applying different colored ink layers onto a surface of a polycarbonate sheet using a silk screen printing. In some instance, an edge of an underlying ink layer may cause a visible step line on the face of the appliqué. To reduce or eliminate these visible step lines, an outer boundary area of the printing layers invention are defined as a dispersing dot pattern.

  • Patent number: 7086764
Abstract: A glare resistant display for automotive vehicles has a lens with horizontal grooves which deflect reflections of external light sources, such as sun light, away from drivers while allowing illumination from behind the lens to pass therethrough so as to be visible to drivers. Indicia is disposed on the front face of the lens and a pointer pivots behind the front face. The indicia and pointer are made distinct because they block or absorb portions of the illumination coming from behind the lens. By utilizing lenses which minimize reflection, dials of instrument panels can be moved further toward steering wheels and drivers, thereby releasing space behind the dials for other uses.

  • Patent number: 7066630
Abstract: A gauge or dial has multiple displays for indicating various vehicle operating conditions. Pointers indicate a range of measured values on some of the displays. A fixed hub covers ends of the pointers where they connect with their drive shafts and extend through the dial. The hub has a display screen with a graphic or symbol imprinted on it. A conduit directly under the hub on an opposite side of the dial extends to a printed circuit board. A light emitting diode is mounted on the printed circuit board within the conduit. Light from the diode is reflected through the conduit to backlight the symbol on the display screen. Switching on and off of the diode is controlled in response to sensing or measurement of a vehicle condition or vehicle component operation, such as a turn signal.

Abstract: In a rotary electric component, an annular thin faceplate disposed around a rotary knob is provided with an illuminated display portion inner and outer circumferential portions of the rear surface of the faceplate are bonded and fixed to a holder, and the rotary knob and the display portion is assembled in cutout of a front panel. A large-diameter annular portion of the holder adhering to the outer circumferential portion of the faceplate protrudes forward farther than a small-diameter annular portion adhering to the inner circumferential portion. A protruding portion of the front panel extending around the circumferential edge of the cutout presses a region near the outer circumferential portion of the faceplate. As a result, the inner circumferential portion of the faceplate is reliably compressed against the holder a small-diameter annular portion).

  • Patent number: 6979094
Abstract: A reflector provides different-colored backlighting to indicia and a background field of an instrument dial. The dial is mounted on a reflector, forming an interior space. The reflector is assembled on a printed circuit board (PCB). A recessed section of the reflector has an opening exposing a portion of the PCB to the interior space. Another section of the reflector provides a short tube having an inner cavity suspended over the opening. A first group of light emitting diodes is mounted on the exposed portion of the PCB under the tube such that light from the first group is reflected through the inner cavity to light a pointer. A second group of light emitting diodes having a different color is mounted outside the tube and backlights the indicia of the dial. A gap between the exposed portion of the PCB and an end of the tube enables light to leak from the inner cavity and backlight the background field of the dial a different color than the indicia.
