Refractor Type Modifier Patents (Class 362/244)
  • Patent number: 4698734
Abstract: An indirect luminaire which has an opaque housing that masks light directed downwardly of the luminaire is provided with an elevated light source, that is, a light source which is elevated relative to the side walls of the luminaire housing. Luminaire lenses extend upwardly from the side walls to receive generally laterally directed light and to redirect same. The luminaire lenses are formed to receive laterally directed light from the elevated light source and to refract same in a direction near or above the horizontal plane of the fixture such that the pervasive problem of excessive brightness in certain prismatic surfaces is substantially eliminated. Also disclosed is two level lighting employing an elevated light source and a lens in accordance with the invention and a second light source directly beneath the elevated light source in an over/under relation. The disclosed two level lighting provides two levels of light without disturbing the symmetry of the light distribution pattern of the luminaire.

  • Patent number: 4684919
Abstract: A light-source multiplication device useful in a warning light device, a traffic signal light device, a light display or a lighted sign includes light-emissive diodes as light sources with a multi-prism having facets having apices on an imaginary spherical surface for providing multiple images of the light-emissive diodes, some of which can be viewed over a wide field of vision, thereby minimizing power and maintenance requirements of the device.

  • Patent number: 4545001
Abstract: A lens member for use in a motor vehicle and adapted for being mounted in a recess within a front, contoured surface of the motor vehicle. The system especially designed for using the invention includes a plurality of separate lighting modules, each in turn including a light source and reflector means. The lens member comprises a hollow, enclosed, single piece lens element having a front, clear surface positioned to coincide with the vehicle's front, contoured surface so as to enhance aerodynamic performance of the lighting system (as well as the vehicle), a rear lensing portion positioned substantially at a predetermined angle (i.e., 0 to 30 degrees) relative to the front, planar surface of the modules located adjacent thereto, and side and bottom walls for enclosing the lens member to provide a sealed, dirt-free component.

  • Patent number: 4402038
Abstract: In order to provide for automatic replacement of lamp bulbs (lamps) when they fail to illuminate and to enhance the reliability of signal lamps, such as those which signal oncoming trains as they move along railway tracks, a plurality of lamps are disposed angularly spaced from each other on one side of a turntable which is rotatable under spring bias to bring the lamps successively into positions in alignment with the lens of the signal lamp. A latching mechanism having a latch member incorporated into the turntable and a detent member operated by a solenoid provides for releasable engagement of the turntable so as to enable it to move between the successive positions.

  • Patent number: 4382274
Abstract: A top assembly which comprises a cover assembly having a circular shape with a flat surface and having apertures for securement on top of the light base, said cover assembly having at least one window fitted with optical prism or lens means for the passage of each output light beam from an optical system, and further having a draining aperture in front of each said window; and at least one light channel plate to be mounted adjacent the cover assembly in coaxial alignment with the optical axis of the apparatus, said channel plate having an elongated shape with circular arcuate end sides, the curvature of a first of said end sides mating with the curvature of the peripheral edge of the cover assembly so as to be placed adjacent said peripheral edge. The cover assembly has cover inner means secured to the underside of it to form with said cover assembly a water-tight enclosure for the optical system.
