Patent number: 6196703Abstract: A control system is provided for use in conjunction with a lighting fixture which will provide additional safety by avoiding the risk of fire. The safety system provides a number of sensors which are capable of detecting the presence of objects in close proximity to the lighting element and appropriately switching power off when such objects are detected. The actual detection is accomplished by use of a plurality of infrared sensors which create an infrared shield around the bulb of the lighting fixture and insure no objects intrude upon the shielded space while the lighting system is in operation. A second safety benefit is provided by the use of a tilt switch. The tilt switch cuts off power to the lamp if the lamp is tipped or knocked over.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 1998Date of Patent: March 6, 2001Assignee: Holtkotter International, Inc.Inventors: Paul W. Patent number: 5677596Abstract: A plug has a two-part housing accommodating a printed board with an electrical screening element for preventing propagation of electrical disturbing radiation during the operation of a gas discharge lamp. A mass of a durable elastic material such as silicon is applied on a part of the periphery of at least one screening element between the screening element and the adjoining housing part. The inner space of the housing is filled with a casting mass of an electrically insulating material in which also an elastic mass is enclosed. The elastic mass uncouples the screening element from the housing and from the casting mass, so that a thermal expansion of the screening element is possible and also vibrations of the plug are not rigidly transmitted to the screening element.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 1996Date of Patent: October 14, 1997Assignee: Robert Bosch GmbHInventors: Alexander Mueller, Thomas Fabry, Peter Kusserow, Thomas Loeffler

Patent number: 5604406Abstract: A lamp assembly for use with a rapid start metal halide bulb, and including a lamp head housing and a power supply source. The lamp head housing includes a circuit board with power supply contact surfaces, a high voltage resistant socket, a reflector, and an on-off switch. The circuit board provides an ignition voltage, an ignition voltage spike, and a supply voltage to the rapid start metal halide bulb. The power supply contact surfaces connect power to the circuit board. The high voltage resistant socket holds the rapid start metal halide bulb and is electrically coupled with the circuit board. The reflector is arranged relative to the high voltage resistant socket, and reflects light emitted from the rapid start metal halide bulb. The on-off switch is electrically coupled with the circuit board.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 1995Date of Patent: February 18, 1997Assignee: Intermacon AGInventor: Harry Gaus

Patent number: 5597232Abstract: A reflector, a metal halide lamp and a container casing containing a lighting circuit board for the metal halide lamp are mounted within a lamp housing. The container casing, having a generally rectangular parallelepiped shape, is mounted on the lamp housing through a bracket extending along the rear surface of the reflector in tilted relation to a vertical axis. If an impact is applied to the front side of a headlamp, the container casing rises, thereby protecting the container casing from breakage because of a cushioning effect obtained when the container casing partially deforms the reflector.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 1995Date of Patent: January 28, 1997Assignee: Koito Manufacturing Co., Ltd.Inventors: Hideki Ohashi, Shinji Karasawa

Patent number: 5584559Abstract: An actuator circuit unit of a discharge-type headlamp is connected through a connector to a discharge bulb located within a lamp body, and is inserted and fastened to a mounting hole of the lamp body with the actuator circuit unit protruding rearward of the lamp body. A connector of an output cord from a ballast circuit unit, which is located near the headlamp, is removably inserted into a connector connection portion attached to the outer surface of the actuator circuit unit. By turning the actuator circuit unit along and within the mounting hole, the unit can be pulled out of the mounting hole. A rotation blocking member (rib), which projects rearward from the rear wall of the lamp body, is provided in the vicinity of the mounting hole. When the actuator circuit unit is turned in the removal direction, the rotation blocking member comes in contact with the connector that has been inserted into the connector connection portion, blocking further turning of the unit.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 1994Date of Patent: December 17, 1996Assignee: Koito Manufacturing Co., Ltd.Inventor: Atsushi Toda

Patent number: 5584575Abstract: A retrofit lighting fixture adapted to fit within a ceiling recess having a conventional electric light socket. The fixture includes a dome shaped reflector open downwardly within which a pair of fluorescent tube lights depend through receptacles in a circular top section. A cylindrical cover fits concentrically over the back of the reflector encompassing the connector ends of the tube lights. A hollow housing containing an electronic ballast for the fluorescent tube lights attaches to the cover. The housing has a cylindrical outer surface and may be formed as a ring, a plurality of cylindrical segments forming a ring, or a complete solid cylinder. A support cord extends from a male base connector through the ballast housing, cover and reflector. The base connector mates with the light socket and a friction member is advanced upward along the cord to the inner surface of the reflector to retain the fixture within the recess.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 1995Date of Patent: December 17, 1996Assignee: Scientific NRG. Patent number: 5562339Abstract: An vehicular lighting unit in which a connector is prevented from being dislodged and disconnected from a light bulb due to vibration of the connector during operation of the vehicle, and the connector is prevented from short-circuiting and touching the lit bulb that has been heated to high temperatures. The lighting unit includes a lamp housing, a lens covering the front opening of the lamp housing, a reflector placed in the lamp space formed with the lamp housing and the lens, and a bulb detachably fitted to the reflector, wherein an opening for use in replacing the bulb is formed on the rear side of the lamp housing, a detachable cover member is provided for the opening, a power supply cord is passed through the cover member, and a connector for coupling the power supply cord and the connecting cord connected to the bulb is fitted into the recessed portion provided inside the cover member and fixedly supported thereby.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 1995Date of Patent: October 8, 1996Assignee: Koito Manufacturing Co., Ltd.Inventors: Toshio Tanaka, Takaaki Nishizawa

Patent number: 5550722Abstract: An electric lamp including a light source, a lamp cap having a shell and a base, a housing connected to the light source and to the lamp cap, and a ballast which is electrically connected to the light source for operating the light source and which is arranged at least partly in a space surrounded by the housing and the lamp cap. The lamp cap includes contacts electrically connected to the ballast at least during lamp operation, one of said contacts being provided on the base and a further one on the shell. The further contact is formed by a band of conducting material around the lamp cap, which band directly adjoins the base at one side and adjoins a band of insulating material around the lamp cap at another side. This suppresses the interference generated in the supply mains, due to capacitive coupling between the ballast and the further contact, to a considerable degree.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1993Date of Patent: August 27, 1996Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventors: Lambertus J.
