Optical Waveguide Patents (Class 362/610)
  • Patent number: 8118468
Abstract: Disclosed are apparatus and methods for illuminating a display. In certain embodiments, the illumination apparatus includes a light guide that receives light from a light generator along an edge of the light guide and directs the received light via light extractor features (e.g., grooves) towards a display. The light guide includes at least two sets of light extractor features that are rotated with respect to each other so as to reduce a shadowing effect on the display when the display is viewed from within a specific range of viewing angles. In further embodiments, the spacing or orientation of each or one of the extractor feature sets may also be adjusted so that other visual artifacts, such as a Moiré effect, are reduced.

Abstract: A light guide with input and output faces 2, 3a is polar-symmetric about the first face 2 and has optical properties such that the angle at which a ray is injected into the first face determines the position at which it leaves the second face 3a, or, if operated in the reverse direction, the position at which the ray enters the second face determines the angle at which the ray leaves the second face. The light guide includes a tapered transparent sheet 3, light from the first face entering at the thick end of this sheet, and the second face forming one face of the tapered sheet. An input/output slab 4 adjoins the tapered sheet 3 for fan-out of light from the first face 2 to the tapered sheet, and a transition region 8 is located between flat and tapered sheets. Abstract: A luminaire 31 has a transparent light waveguide 33, which includes a perimeter edge 41, 43, at least one light feed edge portion 41 along its perimeter edge, a visible surface 34, and light extracting means 38. A support structure 49 supports the light waveguide along at least a portion of its perimeter edge, and a light source, such as LEDs 45, is provided for introducing light into the light feed edge portion of the waveguide. Light is extracted from only a portion of the waveguide by the light extracting means. The light extracting means produces one or more luminous areas on a portion of the visible surface of the waveguide, and are positioned on the waveguide such that the luminous area or areas produced thereby give the appearance of a source of light for the luminaire that is substantially detached from the luminaire's support structure.

  • Patent number: 7777954
Abstract: Various embodiments of the invention include an interferometric optical modulator comprising a substrate layer and a light direction layer. Such an interferometric modulator may be integrated with a diffuser layer in a display device in a way that physically integrates the diffuser layer into the light direction layer in a way where the diff-user layer does not interact with light propagating within the light direction layer. As a result, most of the light propagating within the light direction layer does not penetrate into the diffuser which would inhibit performance of the display. In some embodiments, the interface between the diffuser layer and the light direction layer has a lower index of refraction than the light direction layer and the transparent substrate so that total internal reflection occurs at the interface.

  • Patent number: 7758227
Abstract: An enhanced light fixture containing a volumetric, anisotropic diffuser to control the spatial luminance uniformity and angular spread of light from the light fixture is disclosed. The anisotropic diffuser provides increased spatial luminance uniformity and efficient control over the illuminance such that power reductions, reduced cost or reduced size may be achieved. The anisotropic diffuser contains one or more regions of asymmetrically shaped light scattering particles. The spread of illumination of light from a light emitting source can be efficiently controlled by using a thin, low cost, volumetric, asymmetric diffuser to direct the light in the desired direction. This allows the reduction in number of light sources, a reduction in power requirements, or a more tailored illumination. When the anisotropic diffuser is used in combination with a waveguide to extract light, the light is efficiently coupled out of the waveguide in a thin, planar surface.
