Abstract: A multi-display system includes a single, two-sided backlight assembly between the display panels. The two-sided backlight assembly is able to emit light in two light paths generally 180 degrees apart—one light path passes through one of the display panels and another light pass through the other of the display panels. That is, the two-sided light guide assembly emits light out two sides and generally in opposite directions. The two-sided backlight assembly uses lights such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) mounted on the side of a light guide thereby permitting the backlight assembly to be relatively thin. Because a single, thin, two-sided backlight assembly is used, the overall depth of the multi-display system is less than would be the case if two separate backlight assemblies were used.

  • Patent number: 8926127
Abstract: A highly efficient, lightweight solid state lighting panel is disclosed that has multiple LED sources, and emits a substantially uniform light intensity between said sources. The light from these sources is directed towards a highly reflective, diffusive, backing. These LED sources are placed between the reflector and a partially transmissive, partially reflective output coupler to form a cavity. The LEDs, which are mounted to printed circuit boards to form strips, can be either attached to the inner surface of the diffuser with adhesive, or suspended on a thermally dissipative structure within the cavity. By optimizing the reflector to have as high of a reflectance value as possible (>95%) along with a output diffuser with about 50% transmission and 50% reflection, one can obtain cavity transmissions higher than 90%. The output from this disclosed design is more pleasant to look at than those with LEDs that directly illuminate the diffuser, causing hotspots.

Abstract: A transparent display apparatus is provided. The display apparatus includes a plurality of white sub-pixels and a plurality of color sub-pixels that are mixedly arranged. The display apparatus also includes a control module for controlling the white sub-pixels and the color sub-pixels. When the display apparatus is in a transparent mode, the control module reduces or stops light emitting from the color sub-pixels and allows at least a part of ambient light behind the white sub-pixels to emit from the white sub-pixels to achieve the see-through effect. When the display apparatus is in a display mode, the control module adjusts at least one of the white or color sub-pixels to ensure that light from the white sub-pixels is far less than light from the color sub-pixels.

Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for reducing hotspots in backlit displays. Hotspot artifacts in multi-color backlit displays can be reduced by incorporating optical structures along the edges of light guides incorporated into the backlights. The optical structures are positioned adjacent to light emitting modules that emit light into the light guide. Light emitted from the light emitting modules passes through the optical structures before entering the light guide. Hotspot size can be reduced by appropriately configuring the shapes and sizes of these optical structures. In some implementations, the optical structures may include serrations along the side of the light guide adjacent to the light sources. In some other implementations, the optical structures may include dimples. Size of hotspots may also be reduced by reducing the distance between adjacent light sources of the same color.
