Abstract: Light emitting panel assemblies include one or more light emitting panel members each having at least one pattern of optical deformities that may be varied in size, shape, density, placement, angle, rotation and/or type to obtain at least one light output distribution having a form or shape of at least one of text, graphics, logo or image. At least some of the optical deformities may be shaped or oriented preferentially to cause different colored light propagating through the panel member in different directions to create a multi-colored light output distribution. Also, a plurality of panel members each having a different light output distribution may be placed in overlying relation to one another to produce a composite output distribution when viewed through the panel members or a display overlying the panel members.

  • Patent number: 7097340
Abstract: The planar light source of this invention comprises: a light guide plate made of a platelike, light-transmitting material formed with a reflection surface on a bottom side thereof, the reflection surface being formed by combining a plurality of kinds of reflection means; and an illuminating light source arranged opposite a light receiving side surface of the light guide plate; wherein the light guide plate has formed smooth a boundary on the reflection surface between the plurality of kinds of reflection means so as not to form any step between the adjoining reflection means. This construction prevents the formation of a dark-bright fringe pattern between the plurality of reflections means when the light source is illuminated.

Abstract: A planar surface illuminator (20) for installation below a liquid crystal display panel includes a light guide plate (22) and a plurality of light emitting diodes (21). The light guide plate has a bottom surface (223), an end surface (221) and a number of dots (23) formed on the bottom surface. The light emitting diodes are positioned adjacent the end surface to irradiate the light guide plate. Shortfall areas (223a) in the light guide plate between each two adjacent light emitting diodes are lightened by placing special dots (23a) therein, which special dots are made of melamine-based fluorescent particles. The melamine-based fluorescent particles function as small light sources, thus lightening the shortfall areas. The brightness of the planar surface illuminator is thereby balanced.

Abstract: A light guide plate has a hologram pattern on a light exit surface. The hologram pattern anisotropically diffuses light in the direction parallel with a light incident surface of the light guide plate. On a back surface of the light guide plate are formed mirror-polished prism structures extending parallel with the light incident surface. A downward-pointing prism sheet with a given prism apex angle is placed on the light exit surface of the light guide plate.
