    Abstract: The invention refers to a diffusion plate and a backlight module having the diffusion plate. The diffusion plate comprises a plate-body and a plurality of pyramid-like structures arranged on a surface of the plate-body. Each pyramid-like structure has a bottom surface, a first convex portion and a second convex portion. The first convex portion and the second convex portion have different vertex angles, and therefore the pyramid-like structure can also be called as “pyramid-like structure with multiple vertex angles”. The pyramid-like structures with multiple vertex angles can increase the light splitting points, which can improve the light splitting effect of the diffusion plate. The light source of a single light-emitting diode can be divided into eight point-light sources (light splitting points) or more, which is double the number of light splitting points compared with the traditional pyramid structure with single vertex, and thus can greatly improve the light diffusion effect.

The first front and rear cap layers are porous to allow the porogen gas to escape and air to enter into the recesses. The air maximizes a difference in refractive indices between the high-index transparent material of the waveguide and the air to promote reflection in the waveguide from interfaces between the waveguide and the air.

    Abstract: A system for illuminating a reflective display or other material from a planar front device and a method of manufacture thereof. The system includes a light guide plate that conducts light from an edge light source across the face of a reflective display. Micro scattering features are formed on an outer surface of the light guide, farthest from the reflective display or material. A stepped index layer is formed on the surface of light guide plate containing the micro scattering features. The stepped index layer has an index of refraction lower than an index of refraction of the light guide plate to assist in the total internal reflection of light injected into the light guide plate. The micro scattering features, light reflecting areas, redirect luminous flux toward the display. In one embodiment, the micro scattering features are formed as white dots on the light guide plate.

The reflector can be adhered to a solid lightguide, a frame enclosing a portion of a backlight, a frame enclosing a hollow lightguide cavity, or an optical sheet positioned at the output surface of a backlight.
