  • Patent number: 4784216
Abstract: This application discloses several components relating to a heating apparatus which preferably are used in conjunction with each other in an apparatus for heating solid granular or particulate material, such as aggregate used to make asphalt concrete. One component of the present invention includes a heater-condenser unit which indirectly heats the material by circulating heat transfer fluid within hollow plates contained in a housing holding the material. The material is heated, the heat transfer fluid is condensed and a condensate removal means associated with the hollow plates removes the condensate from the housing. The heat transfer fluid used in the heater-condenser preferably is supplied in the form of a vapor or gas evolved from liquid contained in material heated by another type of heater. In this other type of heater, the material to be dried enters a chamber containing hollow heat exchange plates through which a primary heat transfer fluid is circulating.

  • Patent number: 4638747
Abstract: The invention comprises a coal-fired burner system for use in a drum mix asphalt plant or drum dryer used for producing asphalt paving composition. Coal to fire the burner is ground to a -200 mesh size by an air-swept rotary impact mill, and a classifier at the exit from the mill controls the size of the particles leaving the mill. The pulverized coal particles are recovered from the exhaust airflow exiting the mill by a fiber filter collector and temporarily stored in a small surge bin. Coal is metered from the surge bin into a primary air conduit leading to the burner. The availability of a small but ready supply of coal in the surge bin provides quick response to a need for increased coal while avoiding the dangerous storage of large quantities of pulverized coal dust. As the weight of coal dust in the surge bin decreases, control circuitry provides for the processing of additional coal to maintain a ready supply of processed coal in the surge bin.

  • Patent number: 4411530
Abstract: A system and method for rapid beneficiation of bentonite clay is disclosed. Beneficiation of the bentonite clay occurs through oxidation of structural ferrous iron. For rapid beneficiation, bentonite clay, preferably ground, is subjected to moist air while the clay is being agitated, preferably by tumbling within a rotating drum, to provide rapid exchange of moisture and oxygen in the air with the bentonite clay aggregates to thereby increase the speed of oxidation of ferrous iron in the bentonite clay. • Patent number: 4298287
Abstract: In a continuous drum mix asphalt plant, dust is exhausted from an intermediate zone of the drum mixer between its drying and mixing zones. The dust is exhausted radially through openings into a collection housing, which communicates with a dust collector and exhaust blower. An end housing at the discharge end of the drum communicates with the same dust collector and blower. Dampers are provided to control the relative proportion of air exhausted from the drum through the respective housings. Aggregate deflectors on the interior wall of the drum at the intermediate zone allow air and dust to flow while inhibiting the flow of aggregate. The collection housing surrounding the intermediate zone is of a size such as to produce a reduction in the velocity of the air as it passes out of the drum. Consequently, it serves as a knock-out box for the collection of larger particles which are carried out of the drum, but which settle out of the air stream as a result of the velocity decrease.

  • Patent number: 4272212
Abstract: A process for rejuvenating and recycling used asphalt and a machine including a pugmill mixing chamber for mixing crushed asphalt supplied thereto and for mixing water, calcium oxide and asphalt oil therewith is disclosed. The water and calcium oxide mixture react and chemically combine to form a calcium hydroxide filler material to thus fill the voids and gaps in the rejuvenated asphalt that would otherwise exist. The reaction, being exothermic, increases the temperature of the resultant asphalt based mixture to a level suitable for spreading of the rejuvenated material on a prepared surface. The asphalt oil is preferably preheated using a heat exchanger coil connected to a diesel engine radiator, which coil is immersed in an asphalt oil storage tank carried on the machine so that the viscosity of the oil may be reduced to a reasonable value suitable for pumping to the mixing chamber and spraying on the materials contained therein.
