Patent number: 8827545Abstract: A tumbling container is mounted for rotation with a curved screen fixedly mounted within the tumbling container. A multiple vane paddle is mounted to a shaft that is rotatably mounted to the tumbling container. The paddle vanes are formed with angular edges. As the tumbler rotates and the paddle rotates, powder is repeatedly dropped onto the screen to be sifted with the aid of the paddle. Rotating the tumbler further drops unsifted portions of the powder from the screen to mix with additional powder in the tumbler body. Thus, sifting and blending of powders is accomplished in one single operation. The invention utilizes an apparatus having a multiple section screen and a multiple section paddle to enable assembly through the openings in the tumbling container. The screen of a second embodiment has a cowl adjacent to each screen opening to optimize powder lump disintegration.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 2012Date of Patent: September 9, 2014Inventor: Sanyasi R. Patent number: 5938330Abstract: A study was done to compare the performance of a conventional V-blender to a V-blender that incorporates perturbations of the particle flow by rocking the mixing vessel during its normal rotation. Mixing was investigated using glass beads with sizes from 66.mu. to 600.mu. in vessels of approximately one liter volume. Mixture uniformity was assessed qualitatively, using two different methods. One method involved a transparent mixing vessel where it was possible to see particle flow patterns and assess the state of the mixture at its surface during the entire experiment. The second method involved disposable aluminum mixing vessels, where the mixture was solidified by infiltrating the mixture with a binder. By slicing the solidified structure, it was possible to assess the entire state of the mixture including its interior structure after the completion of each experiment. Mixture uniformity was also assessed quantitatively using image analysis of the slices.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 1998Date of Patent: August 17, 1999Assignees: Merck & Co., Inc., Rutgers, The State University of New JerseyInventors: Priscilla A. Patent number: 4854715Abstract: Described is a pressure-resistant mixer with a feed opening (15), a rotating mixing container (1) with a drainage device (20) and with mixing tools (17) arranged eccentrically to the axis of the mixing container axis (35) inside the mixing container (1), and with drive motors (6, 22) and drive devices (33, 34) for driving the mixing devices (17) and/or the mixing container (1).In order, on the one hand, to avoid sliding seals in contact with the materials being mixed, and, on the other, to avoid having to use extremely large size seals, is proposed in accordance with the invention to position the mixing container (1) inside a stationary pressure vessel (3).Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1986Date of Patent: August 8, 1989Inventors: Paul Eirich, Hubert Eirich, Walter Eirich

Patent number: 4797004Abstract: A particulate material mixer has a rotatable drum with an inclined longitudinal axis. A conveyor having an open top trough and auger is located longitudinally in the drum and operates to move mixed material from the drum chamber into a hopper or alternatively back into the chamber. A drive transmission simultaneously rotates the drum and operates the conveyor. A flexible circular seal interposed between an annular end wall and a circular wall of the drum prevents material from spilling out of the drum. The conveyor trough is mounted for angular movement to regulate the volume of material discharged from the mixer. A manually operated liner actuator allows the operator to select the angular position of the trough. The hopper has a discharge door and chute to direct mixed material away from the mixer to a desired location.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 1987Date of Patent: January 10, 1989Assignee: Van Dale Inc.Inventor: Floyd E. Patent number: 4772434Abstract: A process for the preparation of soap and soap/synthetic detergent products from raw materials normally employed in the manufacture of such products including fatty acids, triglycerides and caustic by subjecting such raw materials to intensive countercurrent mixing whereby saponification takes place in a relatively short time, and whereby cooling and moisture removal of the soap mass is accomplished by making the mixing vessel substantially air tight and applying a vacuum to the soap mass within the vessel to yield a product, preferably in granular form, which requires no further drying for most uses. The resulting product can, if desired, can then be subjected to plodding, extrusion and stamping to form soap in bar form. The starting material can also be a mixture of such raw materials where neutralization has already proceed to some degree, preferably to the neat soap stage.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 1986Date of Patent: September 20, 1988Assignee: The Dial CorporationInventor: E. Patent number: 4698917Abstract: A vacuum rotary drier comprising a hollow body which rotates about a horizontal axis is provided with supplementary stirring devices. These devices, which are fixed to the walls of the hollow body, include a motor located outside the drying chamber and a stirring implement which rotates at high speed within the drying chamber and serves to break up lumps present in the product to be dried.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 1986Date of Patent: October 13, 1987Assignee: Italvacuum di Ing. P. Debolini & C. S.A.S.Inventor: Paolo Debolini

Patent number: 4671666Abstract: The invention relates to a mixer having a mixing vessel composed of two vessel parts and which can be pivoted through 180.degree. about a horizontal axis. The stirrer shaft is coaxial with the axis about which the vessel is pivoted and the drive motor of the stirrer is stationary. Such a mixer is distinguished by a simple and light transport facility for the product to be mixed, the use of the same mixer for different products, simple cleaning of the second vessel part, and a good mixing effect.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1985Date of Patent: June 9, 1987Inventor: Friedrich W. Patent number: 4611922Abstract: Described is an apparatus for treating materials which are capable of flow, comprising a container (1) which rotates about is central axis (5) which is inclined with respect to the vertical, with a wall and/or bottom scraper plate (2) which is arranged substantially stationarily with respect to the cylindrical inside wall of the container (1), a discharge opening (3) disposed in the bottom of the container (1) and a rotating tool (6) which engages into the material. To reduce the amount of power consumed, while giving good treatment effects, and to enhance the output of the machine, with respect to the available volume in the machine, it is proposed according to the invention, that the container (1) is driven at a sub-critical speed of rotation, the rotating tool (6) is arranged exclusively at the downstream side of the apex, that the space on the upstream side is free of fittings therein and that the scraper plate (2) is disposed in the vicinity of the apex of the container (1).Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 1984Date of Patent: September 16, 1986Assignees: H.
