  • Patent number: 5816698
Abstract: A plasticating apparatus including a rotating screw having a helical flight disposed within and cooperating with the inner wall of a heated barrel. Solid resinous material is introduced to a helical valley extending between said flight to be heated and plasticized by said apparatus while being advanced towards an outlet opening by the rotation of said screw. The screw has a meter section for working, melting and mixing said resinous material at high temperatures. The bottom surface of the helical valley in said metering section is divided into side by side relatively shallow and relatively deep levels. Within the metering section is a transit channel having a reverse helical direction as compared with the helical direction of the flight. Because of the reverse helical direction of the transit channel, the transit channel intersects the helical flight and helical valley with the transit channel cutting therethrough.

  • Patent number: 5260033
Abstract: An apparatus for the direct fluorination of solid particles of polymeric resins capable of being fluorinated in which the solid particles are in contact with the gaseous phase of fluorine/dense carrier fluid in a tubular reactor with an internal mechanical device comprising a rotatable shaft with screw flight, multiblade or wire brush that mechanically fluidizes the solid phase. The design of the internal mechanical device is a function of the diameter and length of the tubular reactor and the reaction time and other physical properties of the solid particles of polymeric resins. The internal mechanical device prevents agglomeration of the solid particles and promotes uniform contact with the gaseous phase by inducing mobility to the solid particles. The enhancement of solid surface contact with the gaseous phase assists the reaction between the solid polymeric resin and the elemental fluorine, as well as the heat dissipation into the dense carrier fluid.

  • Patent number: 4538917
Abstract: A screw extruder for mixing, homogenizing, and degassing highly viscous rubber mixtures and similarly acting thermoplastics. The extruder has mixing pins associated with the housing in the mixing and homogenizing zone, and degassing pins associated with the housing in the degassing zone. The degassing pins have passages or channels through which gases and vapors are withdrawn. The retaining or damming structure at the entrance to the degassing zone can also be formed of pins associated with the housing. The conveyed material is mechanically and thermally satisfactorily made uniform by the inventive pin arrangement without material shearing forces, and can also be effectively and favorably degassed. High flow-through rates of the material can be achieved with high product quality.

  • Patent number: 4480927
Abstract: A mixing apparatus in which parallel augers are located in a box. The upper mixing augers have specially shaped flighting which provides straight edges linked by corners rather than the conventional helical edge. The lower conveying auger is a helically edged auger with notches at intervals along the edge providing radially oriented surfaces which assist in engaging the material. The flighting of the special straight edged augers is produced from a square blank of sheet metal by pressing it into the spiral configuration required and attaching it to the auger shaft. The complete flighting is made up by several such sections joined end to end.

  • Patent number: 4344580
Abstract: A device for dispensing loose, fibrous material comprising a housing having a reservoir disposed therein for containing the loose fibrous material to be dispensed. The housing has a passageway which extends from the reservoir through which the material is dispensed. At least one auger disc is rotatably mounted in the reservoir approximately adjacent the passageway. A motor or the like is provided to rotate the auger disc such that insulation material encountered by the auger disc is urged toward the passageway. Preferably a bar extends across the reservoir and is spaced from the edge of the auger disc such that as the auger disc rotatingly encounters the fibrous material the bar presents an obstacle to the material which is carried by the auger disc. A centrifugal pump is connected to the passageway by the auger disc. The suction inlet which is connected to the passageway is preferably offset from the center of the housing.

  • Patent number: 4201485
Abstract: An apparatus for continuously mixing liquid resin and powdered hardeners in accurate proportions to produce adhesives is described. A mixing screw and tube lock into a mounting from which they may easily be removed for quick cleanout. The preferred screw has mixing threads that are of the buttress type, having rectangular leading and sloped trailing edges in cross section. The screw is divided into transporting and high shear rate mixing sections. In the transporting section, the rectangular thread edges face in the direction of material flow through the tube. The high shear rate section's buttress threads are modified by spiral cuts in the threads, at a greater lead than the buttress threads. This section is installed with the sloped edge facing the direction of material flow.
