  • Patent number: 4207202
Abstract: Apparatus for making foam from water, air and surfactant produces very small bubble foam by discharging the ingredients for the foam through passages that cause the stream of ingredients to be alternately expanded and contracted as by travel along tortuous passages to generate the foam. The foam may be delivered to pipes of relatively large diameter to a place of use, particularly for dust suppression. A more uniform flow of foam is obtained as compared with foamers of the prior art where the foam sometimes broke up into alternating slugs of foam and air when discharged from pipes of large enough diameter to cause the foam to travel at low velocity.

  • Patent number: 4207009
Abstract: A gravity mixer for fluent materials in which material flows downwardly through a column sequentially along a number of helical paths where it comes into contact with multiple perforated flights which divide the material and divert portions onto other flights for combining and mixing with other portions of material in different paths, thus advancing portions of material and retarding other portions and continuously blending the portions as they are brought together during the fall through the column.

  • Patent number: 4201482
Abstract: A mixing insert of solid material into which intersecting channels are drilled is particularly suitable for use as a static mixer for highly viscous liquids. The insert provides a high quality of mixing while withstanding pressure differences of more than 10.sup.7 Pa along the mixer. If the insert is rotated, static and dynamic mixing properties are superimposed on each other in the mixer. Either forward transport of the materials or return for remixing can be particularly promoted according to the sense of rotation and form of the external channels, which must be partly open.

  • Patent number: 4140625
Abstract: Distribution of a mixed-phase, vapor/liquid reactant stream to a fixed-bed of catalyst particles is accomplished through the use of a distributor tray in the form of a horizontal plate (or deck) having a plurality of vertically-disposed venturi-shaped eductors. The distributing device is installed within a substantially catalyst-free area of the reaction chamber and serves (i) to initially distribute the reactant stream as a froth to the reaction chamber and/or, (2) to distribute the effluent from one bed of catalyst particles to the next succeeding bed of catalyst particles.

  • Patent number: 4129624
Abstract: A fluid mixer providing improved fine mixing of a rough mixture of liquid and gas. The mixer includes a plurality of grooved annular plates defining an annular array of flow passages leading inwardly from a delivery space receiving the rough mixture to an inner central outlet space for discharging the fine mixture. The gas is introduced into the liquid to define the rough mixture in the form of an annular stream directed toward an inlet opening delivering the liquid to a mixing space. The rough mixture is delivered through a transfer space to the annular space about the fine mixer. The annular inlet space has a relatively large volume to provide a low flow rate therethrough to the fine mixer. Confronting grooves of the fine mixer plates may cross, and in the illustrated embodiment, the grooves of one face cross a plurality of grooves of the opposite face. The grooved plates may be arranged in aligned relationship or may be randomly disposed as desired.

  • Patent number: 4124309
Abstract: A method and apparatus for dispersing one liquid of two mutually insoluble liquids into the other liquid or dispersing a pulverized solid powder into a liquid, wherein a mixture of the two liquids to be dispersed or a mixture of liquids containing pulverized solid powder to be dispersed is jetted through a single or a plurality of unit dispersers to a relatively wider gap portion than a nozzle to impinge upon wall surfaces to change the direction of the liquid flow.

  • Patent number: 4087862
Abstract: A bladeless mixing device for use in a mixing system to mix streams of the same or different composition, for example, liquid/liquid, gas/gas, solid/solid, or any combination thereof. In the mixer device streams are tangentially directed into an inlet mixing chamber comprising a convergent conical cavity wherein a converging vortex is created, which is passed through an orifice into an outlet mixing chamber comprising a divergent conical cavity wherein a diverging vortex is developed, which is extracted from the outlet cavity tangentially for subsequent passage through further stages of the mixing system. The streams are combined, separated and recombined several times during the course of their passage through the mixing system which comprises a plurality of stages, until the desired mixing is obtained. The orifice size may be varied, depending upon the extent of mixing and velocity required for thorough mixing of the streams.

  • Patent number: 4084795
Abstract: The apparatus comprises a foaming cylinder containing a foaming chamber into which a liquid foaming agent is discharged through a small orifice. The chamber is closed at one end by three, aligned discs having therethrough a plurality of axially extending openings which connect the foaming chamber to a venturi. Compressed air, which also enters the foaming chamber with the foaming agent, forces the liquid through the openings in the discs to the venturi section. The openings in the center disc are angularly offset from the openings in the two outer discs, so that the discs form a maze through which the foamed liquid passes from the foaming chamber to the venturi. The venturi feeds the foamed liquid to a mixing chamber into which a resin is introduced under pressure through a spinner and orifice so that the foamed liquid is completely mixed with the resin before being discharged as a foamed plastic.
