  • Patent number: 8382362
Abstract: An improved method of making hot mix asphalt, without adding virgin asphalt concrete oil, includes several steps: adding gravel to a container; and heating and rotating the gravel in the container to a suitable temperature for creating the hot asphalt mix. While heated gravel rotates in the container, processed shingles, having a predetermined %/w of AC oil (20%/w on average), are added to a mixing auger along with at least 1 to 2 parts of rejuvenating oil per 100 parts of the processed shingles. The processed shingles and rejuvenating oil are mixed together for about 10 to 20 seconds in the mixing auger creating a slurry of rejuvenated shingles. The slurry of rejuvenated shingles from the mixer auger are then released into the heated and rotating gravel in the container, forming hot mix asphalt with a total oil content of between about 4%/w to 8%/w of the hot mix asphalt, advantageously without adding virgin asphalt concrete oil.

  • Patent number: 7044630
Abstract: A method for operating a counter-flow aggregate dryer for an asphalt plant in which primary aggregate materials are introduced into a first end of a horizontally rotating cylinder and travel to the second, discharge end of the cylinder through drying and combustion zones. Hot gases are generated in the combustion zone to flow in counter-current heat exchange relationship with the aggregate materials for discharge from the first end of the cylinder to air pollution control equipment. Secondary materials like RAP or virgin aggregates are fed directly into the combustion zone. The discharge gas stream is heated above its dew point prior to delivery to air pollution control equipment.

  • Patent number: 6928891
Abstract: An automated apparatus for preparing material samples includes a rotatable drum support assembly, a drum rotatably contacting the drum support assembly, a fan, and a powered drive mechanism. The drum includes a hollow main section and first and second hollow end sections attached to the main section. The first hollow end section includes a first end wall tapering to a first outer aperture. The second hollow end section includes a second end wall tapering to a second outer aperture. The fan is mounted approximate to the first outer aperture for establishing forced air flow through the drum toward the second outer aperture. The drive mechanism rotatably communicates with the drum support assembly for rotating the drum. The apparatus is useful for preparing samples such as paving materials for test such as the determination of specific gravity and absorption.

  • Patent number: 6860313
Abstract: A device for preparing moulding sand. The device includes a mixer configured to operate under at least a partial vacuum and at least one feeder to introduce components to be mixed. An inlet in the mixer is of sufficient size to allow rapid introduction of the components into the mixer from the feeder. The combination of large inlet opening and a pressure differential between the mixer and the feeder significantly reduces the time required to fill the mixer. In addition, the presence of the pressure differential made possible by the vacuum in the mixer reduces the likelihood that airborne contaminants resident in the mixer will migrate outside the mixer. Optional moveable conveyor chutes minimize contact of airborne contaminants with adjacent equipment, while optional mixing tools facilitate the introduction of powdered additives into the mixer.

  • Patent number: 6832850
Abstract: A hot-mix asphalt manufacturing system includes a counter-flow rotary dryer having a combustion chamber, an inlet for dry ingredients, an outlet for hot-mix asphalt, and a pollution control device. The pollution control system includes a pre-filter, a cooling device and a fiber bed filter. Combustion gases from the combustion chamber are directed onto the ingredients for the hot-mix asphalt without substantial introduction of excess air or recirculated air and contact the hot-mix asphalt at a temperature substantially equal to the temperature of the combustion gases. The pollution control system removes substantially all particulates and hydrocarbons from the emissions from the hot-mix asphalt ingredients.

Abstract: A counter-flow drum mixer asphalt plant equipped with a secondary feeder for introducing RAP to direct radiant heat of the combustion zone. Heated virgin aggregate and RAP in the combustion zone are delivered through a transition piece to a first stage of the mixing zone where liquid asphalt is combined with the materials and secondary combustion air flows through the first stage to evacuate blue smoke and steam back to the combustion zone. The second stage of the mixing zone is substantially isolated from secondary combustion air flow where dust and mineral fines are introduced and mixed to complete the asphalt product discharged from the mixing zone. Alternative constructions of the mixing zone are disclosed to provide the first and second stages having such characteristics, as well as options for both the passive and active control of the secondary combustion air.

  • Patent number: 6591891
Abstract: Given green sand is obtained by a mixing operation that is carried out for a short period of time. Discarded sand is supplied as supplementary sand to a sand processing line, so that molding sand can be recycled. Green sand for a molding is used for facing sand or the pocket sand. Bentonite-covered sand is made by mixing reproduced sand, new sand, and discarded sand or any or all of them. The bentonite-covered sand is added to collected sand to supplement it. Also, the bentonite-covered sand is mixed with water, and used for facing sand or the pocket sand.

Nonveiling flights in the combustion zone shield material carried through the combustion zone from direct radiant heat and veiling flights in the drying zone create a curtain of falling aggregates heated by a hot gas stream flowing in a countercurrent direction from a primary burner.
