Abstract: In order to facilitate reduced power consumption of an electronic device (such as a smartphone) when communicating with another electronic device (such as an access point) in a wireless network, the electronic device may change a wake policy based on the applications executing on the electronic device. In particular, the electronic device may monitor a subset of the applications currently executed by a processor in the electronic device, where the subset can include zero or more of the applications. Based on the subset, the wake policy of an interface circuit in the electronic device may be changed. This wake policy may specify a frequency of wake ups to receive information from the other electronic device and/or monitoring of unicast or multicast bits in a Traffic Indication Map element. In this way, the time that the electronic device is in the active mode can be reduced, thereby reducing power consumption.

  • Patent number: 8976778
Abstract: In certain embodiments, a slave clock node in a wireless packet network achieves time synchronization with a master clock node by implementing a packet-layer synchronization procedure, such as the IEEE1588 precision timing protocol (PTP), to set the slave's local time based on the master's time. The slave's local time is then maintained by implementing a physical-layer syntonization procedure, such as synchronous Ethernet, without relying on the packet-layer synchronization procedure. The packet-layer synchronization procedure may be selectively employed to adjust the slave's local time (if needed) after significant periods of time (e.g., substantially greater than one second). Both the packet-layer synchronization procedure and the physical-layer syntonization procedure are traceable to a common reference timescale (e.g., UTC). Depending on the implementation, the packet-layer synchronization procedure can be, but does not have to be, terminated when not being employed to adjust the slave's local time.

Fixed deterministic post-backoff reduces conflicts between access points of overlapping cells. Contention-free sessions can be generated, one from each overlapping cell. Each active access point engages in a fixed deterministic post-backoff. A fixed deterministic backoff delay (Bkoff times a fixed number of idle time slots) is used by all access points, with the value of Bkoff being greater than the number of overlapping cells. The Bkoff should be large enough to enable the traffic that needs to be accommodated by the channel. Each access point has a backoff timer that is counted down using the shortest interframe space possible. A contention-free session is initiated when the backoff timer expires, and it is then reset to the value of Bkoff to start a new cycle.

Abstract: An approach for transmission of data packets, based on virtual frame timing, over a communications channel is provided. A remote terminal receives a first stream of data packets at periodic time intervals. The terminal receives an allocation of time slots within a sequence of TDMA transmission frames, for transmission of the data packets over the channel. The timing structure of the allocated time slots is based on a virtual frame size relative to the interval timing of the first data packet stream, and independent of the frame size/timing of the TDMA transmission frames. The remote terminal may receive a second stream of data packets at periodic time intervals that differ from the time intervals of the first stream. In a multi-stream scenario, the virtual frame size for the time slot allocation is based on the greatest common denominator of the interval timings of the first and second data streams.
