  • Patent number: 7177598
Abstract: Base stations having potentially interfering terminal stations that are geographically located on the same or similar diagonal or Line of Sight (relative to the base station) operate on a first set of time frames (e.g., “even” time frames). Similarly, base stations having potentially interfering terminal stations that are not geographically located on the same or similar diagonals operate on a second set of time frames (e.g., “odd” time frames). By alternating in their use of the even and odd frames, the potential for co-channel interference between terminal stations is minimized. Systems and methods are disclosed which reduce co-channel and adjacent channel interference between terminal stations of different cells as well as adjacent channel interference between terminal stations of adjacent cells. The methods and systems so described can be used during the deployment or expansion of a communication system in a region.

Abstract: One of the common channels of the GSM system is the paging channel (PCH) for alerting the mobile station of an incoming call. The PCH message is scattered among four bursts as a result of coding, interleaving, and mapping processes before transmission. It is a waste of power for a handset to turn on and analyze all four bursts if the PCH message is a dummy one. Ideally, a handset needs to be able to make a determination whether a PCH message is a dummy one in as short of a time as possible and, if it is, turn off the power. Embodiments of this invention include methods and apparatus for enabling a handset to make this determination by merely analyzing the first received burst. Since most of the PCH messages are dummy ones, the proposed methods will cause noticeable savings in the power consumption of the GSM handsets.

In at least one embodiment of the present invention, RFI introduced by one or more RFI disturbers (e.g., ham radios) into a DMT modulated signal may be detected by calculating an RFI canceller coefficient for some or all of the DMT bins of the signal, where the RFI canceller coefficient represents the correlation between the noise at the corrupted bin and the reference RFI noise. The RFI canceller coefficients for the corrupted bins may be calculated using an LMS adaptation process. Those bins where the magnitude of the corresponding RFI canceller coefficient is greater than a certain threshold may be marked as corrupted by RFI.

Abstract: When wireless communications systems are operating in the same general area, collisions between their transmissions are bound to occur. The collisions reduce the performance in the networks. In some wireless communications systems that use a fixed or prespecified transmission frequency pattern, a look-ahead technique that investigates the quality of the communications channel at the upcoming transmission frequencies can be used to allow or disallow transmissions. Additionally, a maximum length of a transmission can be determined based on the quality of the transmission frequency. Finally, if the communications system is controlled by a centralized controller, moving the controller away from sources of interference will often improve performance.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for connection establishment and a radio system relaying packet traffic. A terminal informs the system that it wishes to transmit data. The network part receives the message and allocates default radio resources and informs the allocated resources to the terminal. The terminal sends a first control message to inform the terminal's radio path characteristics. According to the solution of the invention, when allocating the default amount of radio resources to the terminal, the network part is arranged to reserve one or more radio blocks for the terminal's control messages. When the terminal sends the network part information about its radio path characteristics, it is arranged to inform in the message if there are additional characteristics. In that case, the terminal sends a second control message comprising information about its radio path characteristics.

Abstract: An out-of-band ranging technique is automatically initiated at a customer premises equipment unit when the equipment is installed, when power is restored after a power failure or interruption, upon verification of the equipment, upon reconnection after a disconnection of the equipment or the like. To this end, an out-of-band tone is employed that is automatically transmitted when the customer premises equipment that transmits the TDMA signal is powered ON, or transmitted in response to a specific command generated locally or remotely. Specifically, when ranging is being effected the customer premises equipment generates and transmits the out-of-band ranging tone until a message is received from a remote terminal indicating that the transmission of the ranging tone be terminated. The loop delay being determined is the delay interval between transmission of the termination message and detection that transmission of the ranging tone has terminated.

Abstract: A modem, communications system and method are provided with a transmitter and a receiver connected to a modem termination system (CMTS) by a medium. The modem has a memory forming a transmit queue including voice and video. The modem has a controller for sending data units from the receive queue to CMTS. The modem requests unsolicited grant service (UGS) from CMTS when the frame controller detects periodic stream to transmit. Upon detecting a data accumulation in the receive queue, the controller asserts a queue indicator. The Modem receives an occasional extra grant per interval and uses these grants until the queue indicator is not asserted. According to another feature, during transmission, the modem requests subsequent grants in a subsequent interval using an extended header having multiple bits for requesting the multiple grants. The CMTS allocates at least an extra grant to form a grant burst in response to the request.

Abstract: A dual-band receiver for a wireless communication device having multi-slot capability. A first oscillator generates a relatively high frequency traffic LO signal. A second oscillator generates a first relatively low frequency signal, and a third oscillator generates a fixed low frequency signal. A first mixer mixes the first and fixed low frequency signals to produce a relatively high frequency monitor LO signal. A switch selects the traffic LO signal when the receiver is in a traffic slot and the monitor LO signal when the receiver is in a monitor slot. The selected LO signal is provided to a second mixer along with the received signal to produce a first IF signal. A third mixer mixes the first IF signal and the fixed frequency signal to produce an output signal.

  • Patent number: 6804267
Abstract: Transceiver training is optimized for xDSL modems operating in TCM-ISDN environments under NEXT and FEXT interference. Current ITU-T draft recommendations provide for dual bitmaps that are switched synchronized with the burst cycle of TCM-ISDN to provide a data stream having dual bit rates. These recommendations also provide for a single bitmap mode where the NEXT bit map is off. Prior to transceiver training, a modem does not know which mode has been selected. Transceiver training is optimized if the mode selection is known prior to transceiver training and the training signals are designed properly for the selected mode. To accomplish this, the mode selection is exchanged early in the modem initialization process, for example, during initial handshaking. By exchanging the mode selection earlier in the modem initialization process, the modem is able to improve transceiver training and configure properly for the type of data communication (e.g., full-duplex, half-duplex).
