  • Patent number: 10778996
Abstract: A co-located block of a video block to be decoded is determined. The co-located block is either (i) a forward reference block or (ii) a backward reference block. A reference motion vector is selected for the video block. When the co-located block is backward reference block and has a forward reference motion vector and a backward reference motion vector, the forward reference motion vector of the co-located block is selected. When the co-located block is forward reference block and has a forward reference motion vector and a backward reference motion vector, the backward reference motion vector of the co-located block is selected. When the co-located block has only one reference motion vector, the one reference motion vector of the co-located block is selected. When the co-located block has no reference motion vector, a zero-reference motion vector for the video block is selected.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure provide methods and apparatuses for video encoding/decoding. In some examples, an apparatus for video decoding includes receiving circuitry and processing circuitry. The processing circuitry decodes prediction information for a current block in a current picture from a coded video bitstream. The prediction information is indicative of a prediction mode that is based on a merge candidate list. The processing circuitry constructs, in response to the prediction mode, the merge candidate list that includes at least a first block vector candidate with a reference picture being the current picture. Then the processing circuitry adds a new merge candidate that is calculated by averaging two candidates in the merge candidate list. Further, the processing circuitry determines, a predictor from the merge candidate list, and reconstructs at least a sample of the current block according to the determined predictor.

  • Patent number: 10469824
Abstract: In this disclosure, a hybrid digital-analog video coding scheme is described. For a video including at least two associated sequences of frames such as a stereo video, some of the frames are digitally encoded, while the others are encoded in an analog way with reference to the digital frames. For an analog frame, a previous frame in the same sequence/view and a temporally consistent frame in another sequence/view will be encoded as digital frames. These two digital frames are used to provide side information in encoding the analog frame. At decoding side, inverse operations are performed. Such “zigzag” hybrid coding significantly improves the coding efficiency while providing robustness and good visual quality.

Abstract: Groups of video frames can be compressed using reversed ordering. For a group of a video sequence having a display order, a determination is made as to whether to arrange the group in a reversed display order before a prediction process of an encoder for the group. Responsive thereto, the group is arranged in the reversed display order as an input order to the prediction process. Otherwise, the group is provided to the prediction process in the display order as the input order. In performing the prediction process, the group, received in the input order, is arranged in a coding order using a group coding structure that defines at least one backward reference frame for inclusion within a set of candidate reference frames. Multiple backward reference frames may also be defined. The group is predicted in the coding order using the set of candidate reference frames.

Abstract: In aspects of the present disclosure, a software encoder augments a hardware encoder by implementing portions of a video encoding task that are not supported by the hardware encoder while the hardware encoder implements other portions of the encoding task. The use of a software encoder to augment a hardware encoder in this manner can extend the useful life of a hardware encoder, allow the system to adapt to changes in video coding standards, and in some cases improve performance of encoding implemented by hardware or software alone. It is emphasized that this abstract is provided to comply with the rules requiring an abstract that will allow a searcher or other reader to quickly ascertain the subject matter of the technical disclosure. It is submitted with the understanding that it will not be used to interpret or limit the scope or meaning of the claims.

Abstract: A method and system for detection of artifacts in a video after application of an error concealment strategy by a decoder is disclosed. An absolute difference image is determined by subtraction of a current image and a previously decoded image. A threshold marked buffer is determined to replace the pixel values of the absolute difference image with a first pixel value or a second pixel value, based on comparison of pixel values with a first predefined threshold. A candidate region is determined by determining a pair of edges of the threshold marked buffer having length above a second predefined threshold, distance between them above a third predefined threshold, and pixel values between them in the absolute difference image, less than a fourth predefined threshold. Validation of candidate region is based on comparison of characteristics of the candidate region with characteristics of the current image and/or previously decoded images.

Abstract: Since time hierarchically encoded video data needs to include video data of a basic hierarchical layer, and video data cannot be generated in which a frame belonging to an upper hierarchical layer is only encoded, even in a case in which only a part of frames is processed, a basic hierarchical layer frame is needed to be included, and thus, there has been a problem that video data in which only the frame belonging to the upper hierarchical layer is encoded cannot be separately processed. In the present invention, a variable length encoding unit is disposed which encodes, for each sequence, a basic hierarchical layer existence flag showing whether or not a basic hierarchical layer is included in the sequence.

  • Patent number: 10257536
Abstract: A method and apparatus of deriving a temporal derived motion vector in a second direction based on a given motion vector in a first direction for motion vector prediction are disclosed. According to the present invention, a given motion vector for a current block is determined, where the given motion vector points from the current block in a first direction. A reference motion vector associated with a first reference block in a first reference frame is identified. Then, based on the reference motion vector and the given motion vector, a temporal derived motion vector is derived. The temporal derived motion vector points from the current block to a second reference block in a second reference frame in a second direction different from the first direction. The temporal derived motion vector is then used as one predictor for encoding or decoding of the motion vector of the current block.
