  • Patent number: 8537699
Abstract: Techniques are described for controlling the operation of a dynamic rate adaptation algorithm by modifying control parameters exposed by the dynamic rate adaptation algorithm. In one aspect, an apparatus comprises a rate adaptation module comprising a plurality of control parameters. The rate adaptation module monitors conditions of a network and adjusts a coding rate of a media encoder based on the network conditions and the plurality of control parameters. Each of the plurality of control parameters specifies a threshold value or a timing value that controls a response of the rate adaptation algorithm to the network conditions. The apparatus also comprises a client that receives a value for a first one of the plurality of control parameters and sets the first control parameter to the received value.

  • Patent number: 8526507
Abstract: Error concealment is used to hide the effects of errors detected within digital video information. A novel spatial error concealment technique is disclosed for use when the error concealment mode decision determines that spatial error concealment should be used for reconstruction. The novel spatial error concealment technique divides a corrupt macroblock into multiple regions, such as, a corner region, a row adjacent to the corner region, a column adjacent to the corner region, and a remainder main region. Those regions are then reconstructed and information from earlier reconstructed regions may be used in later reconstructed regions. Finally, a macroblock refreshment technique is disclosed for preventing error propagation from harming non-corrupt inter-blocks. Specifically, an inter-macroblock may be ‘refreshed’ using spatial error concealment if there has been significant error caused damage that may cause the inter-block to propagate the errors.

  • Patent number: 8520743
Abstract: A digital television receiving system includes a frame encoder, a data randomizing and expanding unit, a group formatter, a block processor, a deinterleaver, and a multiplexer. The frame encoder encodes an enhanced data frame for error correction. The data randomizing and expanding unit randomizes the encoded enhanced data and expands the randomized enhanced data. The group formatter forms a group of enhanced data having head, body, and tail regions and inserts the expanded data and transmission parameters into the body region. The block processor codes the group of enhanced data, and the deinterleaver deinterleaves the coded enhanced data. The packet formatter formats the deinterleaved enhanced data into enhanced data packets.

  • Patent number: 8401088
Abstract: The present invention relates to an encoding device and a method, a decoding device and a method, an editing device and a method, a storage medium, and a program which can perform encoding and decoding so that buffer failure does not occur. Information, such as a minimum bit rate, a minimum buffer size, and a minimum initial delay time, is contained in a random access point header contained in an accessible point in a bitstream. A bitstream analyzing unit 72 analyzes an input bitstream, sets the above-mentioned information, and outputs the resulting information to a buffer-information adding unit 73. The buffer-information adding unit 73 adds the input information to the input bitstream and outputs the resulting bitstream. The present invention is applicable to an encoding device and a decoding device which process bitstreams.

Abstract: A method for compressing data samples using randomized quantization bins is disclosed. The method generally comprises steps (A) to (C). Step (A) may generate a size signal having a quantization step size corresponding to the data samples in an input signal using a compression circuit. The data samples generally reside in a range of numbers. Step (B) may generate the randomized quantization bins in the range based on a pseudorandom process. Step (C) may generate a plurality of quantized samples in a compressed signal by quantizing the data samples based on the randomized quantization bins.
