Patent number: 9246597Abstract: The present disclosure allows for optical link capacity to be optimized based on transmission parameters, such as amplifier gain, link loss, optical signal-to-noise ratio. For example, optical signals at wavelengths that are susceptible to impairments, such as non-linear effects, or that are not adequately amplified by an optical amplifier, may be modulated in accordance with lower rate/less spectrally efficient modulation formats (“low rate formats”) that are more noise tolerant. On the other hand, those optical signals at wavelengths that are less susceptible to or do not incur such impairments may be modulated in accordance with highly spectrally efficient/higher rate modulation formats (“high rate formats”) that are more noise sensitive. Accordingly, a maximum or optimized capacity may be realized through appropriately choosing, for each channel, a particular modulation format and channel spacing. Such optimized capacity can be readily obtained with adaptive driver circuits.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2010Date of Patent: January 26, 2016Assignee: Infinera CorporationInventors: Pierre Mertz, Kuang-Tsan Wu

Patent number: 8582624Abstract: A set of channelization codes to be monitored is divided into two groups. The first group includes those codes for which an associated symbol modulation and transmit-diversity scheme is known. In the second group are those codes that are characterized by an unknown symbol modulation or unknown transmit-diversity scheme. The quality of the transmission of each code is then evaluated, using a metric. The metric in turn is used to determine whether the code should be used in estimating the covariance matrix by correlating the RAKE data corresponding to the code (i.e., by computing a correlation matrix for the code) or by first subtracting the channel estimates from the channel samples before correlation (i.e., by computing a covariance matrix for the code). An impairment covariance matrix is computed from the covariance matrices and correlation matrices so computed.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2010Date of Patent: November 12, 2013Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (Publ)Inventors: Elias Jonsson, Yoshitaka Murata, Jaroslaw Niewczas, Amit Singh, Kazuyoshi Uesaka

The system comprises a wireless communication network augmented with low cost channel selective repeaters that is capable of repeating only desired signals, thereby suppressing undesirable interference and increasing network capacity. The repeaters can be integrated into an existing wireless network with minimal impact to the existing network layer topology or control structure.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 2005Date of Patent: May 4, 2010Assignee: Science Applications International CorporationInventors: Daniel B. Patent number: 7697466Abstract: At a base station apparatus, known pilot signals for use in channel estimation are transmitted, and in addition thereto MCS pilot signals that are used to perform adaptive modulations respectively corresponding to a plurality of modulation schemes are multiplexed and output. A mobile station apparatus dispreads the respective MCS signals out of the multiplex signal, compares these to known symbols patterns, and sends the MCS pilot signals that show a matching relationship to the base station apparatus as a mobile station reception result. Upon receiving the mobile station reception result from the mobile station apparatus, the base station apparatus selects the modulation scheme of the optimum modulation level for the downlink signals. This configuration makes it possible to switch the modulation schemes in an accurate and simple way.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 2002Date of Patent: April 13, 2010Assignee: Panasonic CorporationInventors: Kazunari Hashimoto, Sadaki Futagi, Kenichi Miyoshi

Patent number: 7668224Abstract: Transceiver circuitry for use in a multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO), orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM), communications environment, is disclosed. Error correction coding according to a fixed-block size code, such as low density parity check (LDPC) coding, is implemented. The codeword length, and codeword arrangement, are selected by determining a minimum number of OFDM symbol periods required for a payload size, and the number of available information bits in those symbol periods. A rule-based approach, for example in a table, is used to select the codeword length, and the number of codewords required. Shortening is then applied to the code, followed by determining whether puncturing or repeating of bits is necessary to efficiently use the available OFDM symbols.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 2006Date of Patent: February 23, 2010Assignee: Texas Instruments IncorporatedInventors: Dale E. Patent number: 7639757Abstract: A pulse modulator has a subtraction stage that produces a control error signal from the difference between a complex input signal and a feedback signal. A signal conversion stage converts the control error signal to a control signal. The control signal is multiplied by a complex mixing signal at the frequency ?0 in a first multiplication stage. At least one of the real and imaginary parts of the up-mixed control signal is then quantized by a quantization stage to produce a real pulsed signal. The pulsed signal is then employed to produce the feedback signal for the subtraction stage in a feedback unit. The pulse modulator according to the invention allows the range of reduced quantization noise to be shifted toward a desired operating frequency ?0.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 2004Date of Patent: December 29, 2009Assignee: LITEF GmbHInventor: Guenter Spahlinger

Patent number: 7616701Abstract: ZEB (zero excess bandwidth) modulation. The modulation rate of a signal is increased to the entirety of a communication channel's available bandwidth. Spectral zeroes at the edges of the available bandwidth now coincide with spectral zeroes at the edges of the Nyquist band and lead to ISI (intersymbol interference), which cannot be eliminated by equalization. Thus, in a ZEB system intersymbol interference (ISI) is intentionally allowed and dealt with by the known technique of TH (Tomlinson-Harashima) precoding. Comparison of conventional zero-ISI systems with ZEB systems, both exhibiting identical transmit spectra with finite spectral roll offs towards the edges of the available bandwidth, illustrate significant gains in channel throughput achievable by the ZEB systems. Similar gains can hardly be achieved by more sophisticated channel coding for zero-ISI systems. For ZEB systems an effective spectral shaping involving a simple infinite impulse response (IIR) of the overall channel is proposed.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 2004Date of Patent: November 10, 2009Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventor: Gottfried Ungerboeck

Patent number: 7562021Abstract: Coding of spectral data by representing certain portions of the spectral data as a scaled version of a code-vector, where the code-vector is chosen from either a fixed predetermined codebook or a codebook taken from a baseband. Various optional features are described for modifying the code-vectors in the codebook according to some rules which allow the code-vector to better represent the data they are modeling. The code-vector modification comprises a linear or non-linear transform of one or more code-vectors, such as, by exponentiation, negation, reversing, or combining elements from plural code-vectors.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 2005Date of Patent: July 14, 2009Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Sanjeev Mehrotra, Wei-Ge Chen, Kazuhito Koishida

Patent number: 7526010Abstract: A composite code is made for example by exclusive-OR'ing each real element of a first constituent code A with each element of a second constituent code B to obtain a basic composite code. To suppress autocorrelation, differing numbers of doping code elements are inserted between code segments made from combining each element of code A with an element of code B. A matched filter first stage removes from its input the A code and any doping code added to it, summing the elements of code A. A matched filter second stage removes from its input the B code and any doping code added at the second level. The summed elements of code B are the input to the first stage. Optionally, the summed elements of the doping code at any level may be delayed and summed with the elements of the A code in the first stage.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 2004Date of Patent: April 28, 2009Assignee: L-3 Communications CorporationInventors: Johnny M.
