Abstract: In one embodiment, a transmitter circuit is provided for data transmission from endpoint devices to collector devices over power distribution lines. The transmitter includes an amplifier circuit configured to receive and convert a first data signal to a pulse density modulation (PDM) encoded signal using high frequency pulses that introduce high frequency components. A low-pass filter of the transmitter is configured to filter the high frequency components of the PDM encoded signal to produce a second data signal, which is an amplification of the first data signal. A coupling circuit of the transmitter is configured to communicatively couple the second data signal from the low-pass filter to the power distribution lines. The coupling circuit filters the frequency of the AC and prevents high voltage of the power distribution lines from damaging the transmitter.

Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure are directed towards a circuit-based apparatus for receiving data communications over power distribution lines that carry power using alternating current (AC). The apparatus has a processing circuit that is configured and arranged to receive an input signal representing the data communications over power distribution lines. For a quadrature encoded signal, the input signal is separated into intermediary signals representing a real portion of and an imaginary portion. The processing circuit can then determine timing information from the real portion of and the imaginary portion. The intermediary signals can then be decimated according to a variable rate of decimation that is responsive to the determined timing information. The decimated intermediary signals are also filtered.

Abstract: A system and method for communicating information through a powerline medium including at least three conductors, where the transmitter transmits at least two signals onto the powerline medium and the receiver receives one or more signals from the powerline medium. The transmitter adjusts the power transmitted into the powerline medium in order to set the adjusted transmit power to a predetermined level, e.g., a level that ensures power radiated from the powerline medium does not exceed a regulatory limit. The process of adjusting the transmit power may take into account a functional relationship between the transmitted power and properties of the channel.

Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure are also directed towards a method that includes maintaining a transmission period which has a start time and an end time synchronized to metrological time. Further, this method, in response to the start time, begins transmission of a frame, which includes a plurality of symbols. This transmission occurs over power distribution lines that carry power using alternating current (AC). This method also includes synchronizing a transmission time for each symbol of the plurality of symbols according to a time-based parameter of the AC. In response to reaching an end of the frame, a synchronization symbol period is determined for a synchronization symbol, as a function of the transmission times, for the plurality of symbols and time from the end of the frame to the end time. The synchronization symbol is then transmitted on the power distribution lines.

Abstract: Systems and methods are described for providing a throughput of 10 Gbps or more in a coaxial cable network and which operate at high frequencies above the existing services on home coax in the range 2 GHz to 10 GHz, or more. The network uses a wide signal bandwidth, in the range, for example, of 8 GHz. Operating above the CATV band and satellite services, the network coexists with these services without mutual interference. The system could be used in networking systems, such as MoCA 3 and Access systems. This is achieved by using a splitter with a low loss and low isolation in the 2-10 GHz range at the point-of entry (POE) of the network signal. Alternatively, an active node to provide a signal booster or a repeater function at the point-of-entry (POE) can be used.

Abstract: In a MIMO communications system a first communications device applies beamforming to a complete transmission packet including both synchronization data and either payload data or training symbols. A second communications device evaluates the beamformed synchronization data and determines and transmits a feedback information indicating minimum required synchronization data and/or a minimum number of training symbols. The first communications device tailors the synchronization data and/or number of training symbols on the basis of the feedback information. Beamforming the complete transmission packet facilitates signal suppression at defined locations. When the channel properties change, the second communications device may provide further channel state information to adapt beamforming in the first communications device without transmission of not beamformed training symbols. The communications system may be a powerline telecommunications system.

Abstract: A signal is provided to each of nominal, higher and lower primary filters in a receiver. The nominal, higher and lower primary filters have different center frequencies and a bandwidth B1 and bandwidths B2, respectively and a bandwidth offset B0, with B2=B1+B0. Signal recovery is performed on the output of each primary filter to obtain recovered signals and error values each associated with one of the primary filters. Each error value is provided to a secondary and tertiary filter, to generate a signal criterion, and whose output is measured to generate a quality metric, respectively, associated with each recovered signal. The recovered signal associated with the nominal primary filter and any other recovered signal having an associated signal criterion below a threshold value is selected and the selected recovered signal which has the lowest associated quality metric is chosen.

Abstract: Systems and methods for routing protocols for power line communications (PLC) are described. In some embodiments, a method performed by a PLC device, such as a PLC meter, may include selecting one or more transmit sub-bands on which to transmit frames, where the transmit sub-bands comprise groups of six carrier frequencies. The PLC device then generates a frame comprising a tone map that indicates which transmit sub-bands are used to carry data for the frame. The tone map using two bits per transmit sub-band to indicate a status of each transmit sub-band. The PLC device then transmits the frame on the selected transmit sub-bands using OFDM. A resolution bit and a mode bit may be used to provide additional information about the transmit sub-bands, such as an amount of power adjustment that has been applied to carrier frequencies and whether dummy bits are transmitted on unused carrier frequencies.

Training frames are detected by shifting the received data; inserting at least one binary value at one end of the shifted received data to generate a modified version of the received data; applying a logic function to the received data and the modified version of the received data that identifies when corresponding bit positions have different values; and detecting the frame marker when an output of the logic function has a first binary value in an approximate middle of a string of a second binary value. The training frames are decoded using a distance between the approximate center of the frame maker and a predefined binary value in an output of the logic function.

Each ECU sends information with a carrier wave having a first frequency lower than a dip frequency estimated by the physical condition and the circuit structure of electric power line, or having a second frequency lower than the first frequency. Or, the physical condition and the circuit structure of electric power line are determined, on the contrary, to make the dip frequency become higher than the frequency of utilized carrier wave. Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium, for selecting receiver gain adjustment values. In one aspect, a method includes receiving aggregate signal characteristic values (“aggregate values”) for a plurality of signals being received over active channels of a power line communications network, the aggregate values being computed based on signal characteristic values for each of the signals being received over the active channels. Using the aggregate values, a determination is made that one or more of the aggregate values have been outside of a valid range of signal characteristic values over a specified period. In response to determining that the aggregate values have been outside of the valid range, a receiver gain adjustment value is selected based on the aggregate values and a receiver gain of a receiver that receives the signals is adjusted.
