  • Patent number: 9767930
Abstract: A pressure vessel comprises an upper vessel section and a lower vessel section. A nuclear reactor core comprising fissile material is disposed the lower vessel section. Upper internals are disposed in the lower vessel section above the nuclear reactor core and are mounted on a suspended support assembly including a plurality of hanger plates connected by tie rods. The upper internals include at least guide frames and internal control rod drive mechanisms (CRDMs) with CRDM motors. The plurality of hanger plates includes a mid-hanger plate that is not the uppermost plate of the plurality of hanger plates and is not the lowermost plate of the plurality of hanger plates. The internal CRDMs are disposed above the mid-hanger plate, the guide frames are disposed below the mid-hanger plate, and the mid-hanger plate engages both the internal CRDMs and the guide frames.

  • Publication number: 20030179844
Abstract: This invention describes an innovative miniaturized decay-heat engine formed by a closed-loop system powered by the spontaneous decay of radioisotopes emitting alpha particles. Said alpha particles are emitted inside a sealed and reinforced capsule or rod whose surfaces reach a relatively high temperature as a result of the capture of the alpha particles in the inner shell of said capsule. Radiation shielding is not a significant problem since alpha radiation is stopped by the materials encasing the capsule. The cladding material covering the alpha capsule or rod acts as the thermal interface and the radiation shield at the same time. This invention provides a power source for time duration significantly longer than any power system powered by fossil fuels with minimum weight. The unit is assembled in an ultra-compact package providing power from a few months to several years without need for refueling.

  • Patent number: 5023044
Abstract: An assembly for controlling the release of neutrons in a nuclear reactor having the core split into two halves. A disk assembly formed from at least two circular disks is positioned substantially at the center of and coaxially with the core halves. Each disk is machined with an identical surface hole pattern such that rotation of one disk relative to the other causes the hole pattern to open or close. The disks may be formed from neutron absorbing material or moderator material. The holes may be provided with fissile material inserts to enhance reactivity when in the open position. A drive motor mounted adjacent the reactor and drive shaft operatively engaged between the drive motor and disks is used to rotate the disks.

  • Patent number: 4967667
Abstract: A system for preventing salvage fusing of nuclear warhead attack weapons including an interceptor weapon having detecting means operably associated therewith for detecting an attack weapon at a predetermined distance. A disarming mechanism operably associated with the interceptor weapon for preventing detonation of the nuclear warhead. The interceptor weapon includes an explosive device for destroying the interceptor weapon during a period when the nuclear warhead is disarmed and hurling numerous particles at the attack weapon. Upon impact, the particles destroy the attack weapon thereby preventing it from ever reaching its full explosive potential.

  • Patent number: 4543230
Abstract: In one aspect, the invention is an improved pulsed-neutron monochromator of the vibrated-crystal type. The monochromator is designed to provide neutron pulses which are characterized both by short duration and high density. A row of neutron-reflecting crystals is disposed in a neutron beam to reflect neutrons onto a common target. The crystals in the row define progressively larger neutron-scattering angles and are vibrated sequentially in descending order with respect to the size of their scattering angles, thus generating neutron pulses which arrive simultaneously at the target. Transducers are coupled to one end of the crystals to vibrate them in an essentially non-resonant mode. The transducers propagate transverse waves in the crystal which progress longitudinally therein. The wave are absorbed at the undriven ends of the crystals by damping material mounted thereon. In another aspect, the invention is a method for generating neutron pulses characterized by high intensity and short duration.

  • Patent number: 4411859
Abstract: A gamma sensor is supported coaxially in a bore, extending through the core of a nuclear reactor, by centering means which span the annular space between the gamma sensor and the bore. Said centering means also acts as a thermal bridge so that the portion of the gamma sensor contacted by the centering means will assume a thermal temperature close to that of the bore. Since poor thermal contact between the gamma sensor and the bore is thereby avoided, the accuracy of sensor readings is improved.
