    Abstract: A nuclear fuel identification system for use in nuclear power plants has an imaging system having a video camera and an array of illuminators surrounding the video camera and positioned to shine onto a nuclear fuel cell. The illuminators are sequentially activated to provide a series of images each having a different shadow pattern. These images are then digitized and stored until a complete set of the images are available. At that time, the images are superimposed and optimized for improved contrast. By viewing the distinct shadow patterns on the nuclear fuel cell, the identifying markings are readily visible. In addition to the shadow imaging system, a variety of laser devices are used to accomplish similar image generating functions. Such laser devices include a laser scanner, a distance laser device, an interferometer, a holographic interferometer, and a bi-refringent crystal prism.

In the one embodiment, a mast extends in the reactor pressure vessel and through an opening in the top guide and through an opening in the core plate. The mast includes an outer tube and an inner tube positioned at least partially within the outer tube. The inner tube is connected to a robotic arm. A slot is formed in the outer tube and the slot extends at least partially along the axial length of the mast. The portion of the inner tube positioned at the location of the slot is in free communication with the reactor components when the mast is positioned within the RPV. The robotic arm can access the reactor components through the slot in the outer tube.

    Abstract: An integrated apparatus for inspecting the arms of jet pump beams using eddy current technology, while also scanning the borehole region using ultrasound technology. In order to inspect the jet pump beam arms, a special scanner is required to properly move an eddy current coil in two dimensions over the complex machined surface on top of the arms. The scanner has two axes of motion and can perform a raster scan in either direction. The inspection payload, an eddy current probe, moves the length of the scanning axis and then the payload is indexed (i.e., moved a small distance) along the indexing axis. The payload is then moved smoothly back along the length of the scanning axis. Data is collected only during motion along the scanning axis. The scanner has a unique curved track design for maintaining the orientation of the eddy current probe perpendicular to the inspection surface. It allows inspecting the top flat surface and the curved edges of the jet pump beams.

    Abstract: In a method of and an apparatus for checking the degradation of the pressure vessel of a nuclear reactor with the pressure vessel of the nuclear reactor being directly measured in a non-destructive manner, a magnetic yoke having an exciting coil and a magnetic flux measuring coil is closely placed in contact with the inner wall of the pressure vessel of the nuclear reactor. The hysteresis magnetization characteristics of the closed magnetic path formed by the magnetic yoke and the pressure vessel of the nuclear reactor are measured. The coercive forces are obtained by the hysteresis characteristics. The hardness of the material comprising the pressure vessel of the nuclear reactor at the part of the magnetic path formed in the pressure vessel of the nuclear reactor is obtained from the coercive forces and the degradation of the material comprising the pressure vessel is checked from the hardness.

    Abstract: An apparatus for carrying out a surveillance program to monitor the neutron fluence and its effect on vessel materials at a position in the annular space between the pressure vessel and core shroud of a boiling water reactor for the purpose of monitoring vessel embrittlement. The apparatus includes an offset capsule holder assembly which fits in an existing capsule holder attached to the inner surface of the pressure vessel wall. The offset capsule holder assembly positions a new capsule holder radially closer to the core, by an amount determined by neutron transport calculations. The new capsule holder is geometrically identical to the original, or a "replacement in kind", allowing the original surveillance capsules to be immediately reinstalled. With the water moderator in the downcomer annulus, the fluence rate increases significantly when the surveillance capsule is moved radially inward from the pressure vessel inside surface toward the core.

Localized noise sources within a vessel are extracted using a distant array of transducers mounted on the vessel wall. Each transducer is an accelerometer which is mounted on the vessel wall using a rigid attachment rod which serves as an ultrasonic waveguide. The output of each transducer is split into low- and high-frequency components, the low-frequency component being a function of the vibrational displacement of the localized portion of the vessel wall and the high-frequency component being a function of the vibrational/ultrasonic waves propagating through the localized portion of the vessel wall.

    Abstract: The girth welds joining the end plugs and the hollow tubes of nuclear fuel rods are inspected automatically using a technique that averages reflectance values, compares the reflectance values to standards defined as proportions of the average, and counts adjacent pixels outside the standards to analyze for defects exceeding a minimum defect size. The minimum defect size is checked by counting the adjacent pixels in mutually perpendicular directions, such as rows and columns in the collected matrix of pixel data. The maximum count in the two directions can be different, for profiling the maximum acceptable defect as to the direction of its extension relative to the tube and/or weld. Tubes are inspected prior to surface treatments that may conceal defects.

    Abstract: A method and an apparatus for inspecting a core shroud by remote operation. The apparatus is a robotic scanning device which can be installed in the narrow space between the core shroud and the jet pumps and which can scan azimuthally and vertically around the circumference of the core shroud. The scanning device provides gross positioning to the area of interest and precise motion control in a limited scanning range. The scanning uses a thin wide arm to support a bank of transducers at its bottom end, and is rigidly mounted to a precision two-axis positioner at its top end. The arm is of narrow thickness to pass through the 0.5-inch access opening and to allow radial flexibility to absorb surface contour variation over the inspection area. The transducer mounting includes a water jet thruster to provide a radially inwardly directed reaction force to maintain the transducers in contact against the shroud. The arm is fabricated with a row of longitudinal holes extending throughout its length.

    Abstract: The length of an object, particularly a spent fuel rod, is measured by taking an optical image of a support surface and then taking an optical image of a fuel rod when placed on the support surface. The two optical images are digitised, stored and then processed to obtain a difference in grey level values between the two stored images. The two images are stored as a plurality of columns each containing pixels having a grey level value. Using an algorithm, the difference between these values in corresponding columns of the two images are determined as root mean square values. The columns are processed in turn to determine which have a root mean square value above a threshold value, these being representative of the presence of a fuel rod. The number of such columns is a measure of the fuel rod length.
