Publication number: 20120093275Abstract: Example embodiments are directed to tiered tie plates and fuel bundles that use tiered tie plates. Example embodiment tie plates may include upper and lower tiered tie plates. Example embodiment tiered tie plates may have a plurality of bosses divided into groups, or tiers, having differing vertical (axial) displacement. Example embodiment fuel bundles may use tiered tie plates such that fuel rods in example bundles may originate and terminate at different vertical displacements, based upon the vertical displacement of the bosses receiving the fuel rods into the tiered tie plates. Optionally, shanks may be used to further vary fuel rod axial displacement and diameter.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 20, 2007Publication date: April 19, 2012Inventor: Michael S. Defilippis

Patent number: 6356614Abstract: Anchor assembly apparatus for improving the structural integrity of a guide tube (26) in a nuclear fuel bundle (20). A sleeve (100) has a proximate end (102) and a distal end (104) that is adapted for insertion into a receiving end (38) of the guide tube. A pin (140) has a near end (142) and a far end (144) adapted for insertion into the sleeve at the sleeve's proximate end. Patent number: 5533078Abstract: A nuclear fuel assembly for a pressurized water reactor having lower and upper tie plates, guide tubes, spacer grids, an instrumentation tube, and extended fuel rods which extend to the lower tie plate and which are spaced radially and supported along the guide tubes by the spacer grids, at least one of the extended fuel rods having at a lower end a fuel rod lower end cap secured by a first spring within an aperture in the lower tie plate and which exerts a lateral force against the lower end cap. The upper tie plate further includes a fuel rod support housing which extends down over the upper end of the at least one of the extended fuel rods and has a second spring positioned in a bore in the fuel rod support housing which exerts a lateral force on the upper end of the extended fuel rod positioned within the bore in the fuel rod support housing.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1994Date of Patent: July 2, 1996Assignee: Siemens Power CorporationInventors: David W. Patent number: 4631167Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing an assembly, as well as to an assembly produced by this method. The foot of the assembly is butt welded to the hexagonal tube prior to the introduction of the bundle of rods into the latter. This introduction takes place in the vertical direction using a jack which passes through the foot of the assembly. The upper neutron protection is then fixed by pressing the tube into recesses. Finally, the vacuum producing system and the plug are fitted in the foot.Application to assemblies for fast neutron nuclear reactors.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 1984Date of Patent: December 23, 1986Assignee: Commissariat a l'Energie AtomiqueInventor: Jean-Marc Brunon

Patent number: 4344914Abstract: A bottom end member (17b) on a retrievable fuel pin (13b) secures the pin (13b) within a nuclear reactor (12) by engaging on a transverse attachment rail (18) with a spring clip type of action. Removal and reinstallation if facilitated as only axial movement of the fuel pin (13b) is required for either operation. A pair of resilient axially extending blades (31) are spaced apart to define a slot (24) having a seat region (34) which receives the rail (18) and having a land region (37), closer to the tips (39) of the blades (31) which is normally of less width than the rail (18). Thus an axially directed force sufficient to wedge the resilient blades (31) apart is required to emplace or release the fuel pin (13b) such force being greater than the axial forces on the fuel pins (13b) which occur during operation of the reactor (12).Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 1980Date of Patent: August 17, 1982Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the United States Department of EnergyInventor: Jerry M. Patent number: 4344915Abstract: A reusable system for removably attaching a nuclear reactor fuel rod (12) to a support member (14). A locking cap (22) is secured to the fuel rod (12) and a locking strip (24) is fastened to the support member (14). The locking cap (22) has two opposing fingers (24a and 24b) shaped to form a socket having a body portion (26). The locking strip has an extension (36) shaped to rigidly attach to the socket's body portion (26). The locking cap's fingers are resiliently deflectable. For attachment, the locking cap (22) is longitudinally pushed onto the locking strip (24) causing the extension (36) to temporarily deflect open the fingers (24a and 24b) to engage the socket's body portion (26). For removal, the process is reversed.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1980Date of Patent: August 17, 1982Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the United States Department of EnergyInventor: David W.
