  • Patent number: 7423785
Abstract: A document is scanned in a scanning device to obtain electronic data. The electronic data represents information on the document. The electronic data is stored to a storage device. An error then occurs either before or after beginning transmission of the data to an e-mail server. The error causes a failure in the communication of the data to the e-mail server. The method of failure detection depends on the type of failure. For a loss of power, the data storage device is examined for the electronic data. If electronic data is found, communication is established with the e-mail server and the electronic data is transmitted to the e-mail server. The data storage device must be a non-volatile data storage device to recover from a loss of power error. For a loss of communication with the server or failure to establish communication with the server, communication is established with the e-mail server and the electronic data is transmitted to the e-mail server.

Abstract: A half-duplex facsimile modem system according to the present invention may exhibit a shorter startup time relative to conventional systems. The modem system exchanges capabilities information concurrently with the transmission of a conventional answer signal, thus obviating the need for performing a separate capabilities exchange procedure. In addition, the modem system is capable of determining a preferred training sequence duration based upon one or more characteristics of the current channel. The preferred training sequence duration is communicated from the answer modem to the calling modem such that the calling modem can format the training sequence in an appropriate manner. The resultant training sequence has a time duration that is variable in response to, e.g., the signal-to-noise ratio of the instant channel. These techniques can result in a significant reduction in the startup latency typically associated with conventional half-duplex facsimile modem systems.

Abstract: A data communication apparatus includes a calling section that performs a communication by sequentially transmitting a calling signal to a destination, and transmitting a shift notification signal that indicates a shift to a short previous-procedure. A memory stores destination information and modem control information in association with each other. When the destination to which the communication is performed corresponds to the destination information stored in the memory, the calling section transmits the shift notification signal, and controls a modem based on the stored modem control information so as to shorten a previous-procedure.

  • Patent number: 6459907
Abstract: Communication systems and methods are provided for selecting a channel for transmission of a facsimile utilizing a wireless communication network which has two different channel types available for wireless communications. In particular, systems and methods are provided which preferentially request one of the service types for a transmission of a facsimile but further provides for use of the alternate service type under conditions where a suitable channel is not available for the preferred facsimile support channel. More particularly, in one embodiment, when digital transmission services are not available, but analog services are available, facsimile transmission is provided over the analog channel rather than denying access to the wireless communication network for transmission of the facsimile.

  • Patent number: 6449349
Abstract: Various kinds of modem control information is stored for each destination, the modem is operated based on stored various kinds of control information to shorten a communication pre-protocol and transmit data when execution is carried out. Also, when a short previous-procedure does not normally proceed, communication is shifted to a second communication procedure whose speed is low so as to continue communication after a lapse of a predetermined period of time. When abnormality occurs after executing the short previous-procedure, various kinds of control information stored in memory means are erased and up-dated. Therefore, time for communication preprotocol is shortened, and a mounted short previous-procedure function appropriately operates even when a communication error rate is high or a line characteristic is changed.

  • Patent number: 6441926
Abstract: A facsimile machine comprises a fax/modem section for communicating signals with a communication line in order to sending and receiving a fax and a computer unit for outputting AT commands such as a DCS reception command for requesting reception of a DCS (Digital Command Signal) and a TCF reception command for requesting reception of a TCF (Training Check Field) to the fax/modem section. The fax/modem section immediately changes into a TCF reception state for receiving a TCF if the fax/modem section received a DCS. In the TCF reception state, the fax/modem section receives the TCF sent via the communication line and temporarily stores the TCF in a TCF buffer, regardless of whether or not the fax/modem section has already received the TCF reception command from the computer unit. The fax/modem section sends the TCF in the TCF buffer to the computer unit when the fax/modem section received the TCF reception command from the computer unit.

  • Patent number: 6434169
Abstract: A relay device associated with each end point modem in a data communication network provides a system for transporting data over a communication channel employing voice compression. Each relay device exchanges relevant parameter information with its associated modem and with each other in order to negotiate compatible data transfer conditions. The protocol exchange between each relay and its associated modem will typically include the calculation of inter-loop delay values for echo cancellation and line probing for line equalization or bandwidth optimization. Supported data rates, modulation type and encoding information is also exchanged. The invention provides a system for full duplex transmission of data over modems while saving on bandwidth because of voice compression techniques.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods for supporting analog fax calls between two wireless subscriber stations in a tandem configuration are presented herein. To support the tandem configuration, full duplex communication may be established between the two base stations. Full duplex communication may be realized by incorporating an echo canceler in the base station, or by utilizing both BFSK channels of the V.21 fax system for communication. The tandem configuration may also be supported by advanced flag synchronization, wherein a second base station will immediately start sending preamble flags to a first base station after a message is transmitted from the first base station to the second base station. The first base station may then synchronize its receiver for immediate receipt of the return message from the second base station.
