A remotely located individual (such as a telecommuter) “logs in” to the remote office platform and, once the individual is authenticated, PBX-like communication with the mobile device is established. If the device is a computer-enabled device and includes a display, the platform can enable a graphical user interface emulating a PBX station set to the device. Alternatively, the remote worker can enter either spoken commands or series of DTMF sequences to utilize the PBX-like features. For these applications, the remote office platform includes a speech recognition module and a translation table for converting a sequence of DTMF tones into a PBX-like call feature (e.g., transfer, hold, mute, etc.).

The editing rules are kept by the router in portions dedicated to individual users. With this system a user can edit at a workstation on the LAN his\her own routing rules, and transmit the edits to the client-server router where the rules will be followed to route calls for that user and protocol.

The SIP server sends a request to the PBX to trigger bridging. When the PBX determines it no longer needs to be involved, it sends the bridging request to the PSTN. More specifically, a mechanism is provided to trigger TBCT (Two B-Channel Transfer) from the SIP server thereby pushing call routing of unwanted calls out of the PBX and preserving PBX ports. The SIP server can retrieve the PSTN-related information from the PBX using either web services or a SIP-based protocol.

This arrangement eliminates the need for an extensive mesh of PVCs or leased “tie lines” carrying voice and data traffic between PBXs across the WAN. It also eliminates the need for routing connections in multiple hops between PBXs. Another advantage is that the number of physical interfaces required on the PBXs and the attached switches is reduced.

    Abstract: A private branch exchange (PBX) system includes plural extension telephones divided into extension groups, and a PBX which sends information about one of the extension group to a caller. Plural extension interfaces (I/Fs) coupling the extension telephones to the PBX are divided into groups. The PBX calls each of the extension telephones coupled to all the extension I/Fs of the extension groups corresponding to a call-in signal. In the PBX, a memory stores text data about the extension groups. A controller sends the text data about the extension group to a caller's telephone responsive to the call-in signal. The information can be thus displayed on an extension telephone or an outside-line telephone of the caller.
